Ghana Chamber of Mines donates sanitary pads to Anumle Cluster of Schools

The Ghana Chamber of Mines, in collaboration with the Ladies Lead Foundation, has donated sanitary pads to the Anumle Cluster of Schools at Kisseman in Accra to mark this year’s menstrual health hygiene day.

Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed globally and annually on May 28, to break the silence and raise awareness about the importance of good menstrual hygiene management.

A speech read on behalf of Mr Sulemanu Koney, the Chief Executive Officer, Ghana Chamber of Mines, said five months worth of sanitary pads were distributed to over 468 students in the schools.

‘Menstrual health is not just a women’s issue; it is a societal issue.

‘When girls and women have access to proper menstrual hygiene products, accurate information, and a supportive environment, they are empowered to lead healthier and more productive lives,’ he said.

Mr Koney said empowerment extended beyond individual benefits and contributed to the economic and social development of communities and nations.

The Ghana Chamber of Mines, he state
d, was committed to supporting initiatives that promote health, education, and well-being in communities.

‘We believe that empowering women and girls is essential to achieving sustainable development and economic growth.

‘Our collaboration with the Ladies Lead Foundation is a shining example of how partnerships can drive meaningful change,’ he said.

He encouraged the students to know that menstruation should never be a source of shame or embarrassment, but a sign of health and vitality.

‘You have the right to manage your menstrual health with poise and to seek the support you need. Remember, you are not alone,’ he said.

He called on authorities to commit to creating policies and practices that support menstrual hygiene management in schools and communities.

‘Let us continue to work together to ensure that no girl or woman is held back because of menstruation,’ he said.

Ms Mina Akrubiri, Secretary to the Foundation, underscored the importance of educating adolescent girls on menstrual health hygiene for
strict observance.

Menstrual health hygiene, she stated, was crucial to the well-being and empowerment of women and to breaking the silence and stigma surrounding menstruation.

She said the Foundation would continue to champion the causes that affect girls going through menstruation and make them feel at ease and comfortable.

Ms Akrubiri said the Foundation, through its project, had educated young girls about menstrual health hygiene management in Korle Gono and other communities to be bold and not be shy about their menstrual health.

The students were taken through health education on menstrual health hygiene.

Eleven-year-old writer provides e-library for St. Paul’s Methodist School

Miss Sarah Kittoe, an 11-year-old writer, and her family have handed over an e-library and a refurbished book library to St. Paul’s Methodist Preparatory School in Tema.

The girl, a Ghanaian residing in the United Kingdom, has authored four books, including ‘The Friendship Club’ and ‘Ama and the Lost Key.’

The e-library is equipped with 20 desktop computers, speakers, headphones, and other accessories to aid teaching and learning.

Miss Kittoe said she visited the school, which is the alma mater of his father, last year to donate some of her books to them but realised that their library needed to be in better shape and expressed his wish to help.

She said she intended to use proceeds from the sale of her books for the project, but more was needed, so, her parents supported her to ensure that her dream of providing a better library materialised.

She encouraged the pupils of the school to make good use of the e-library and the book library to develop an interest in reading and writing, announcing that they
were in talks with the school authorities to start a writing club through which write-ups from the members would be assessed and the winners helped to publish them.

Mr Albert Kittoe, father of Sarah, said the project, which cost them 10,000 pounds, has learning games and materials that could help pupils who are academically poor pick up.

He said too much emphasis was being put on academically good children in schools in Ghana; therefore, the software on the e-library, when used well, will propel the others to learn and understand what is being taught through the games.

He stated that it brings on board inclusion and equity, noting that when they receive such help from the basic level, they could build upon it as they move up the academic ladder.

He called on others to help the various schools with the needed teaching and learning equipment to improve the lives of children in Ghana.

Nana Kofi Baidoo, the school’s headteacher, commended Sarah and her family for their gesture, indicating that only a few sch
ools in Ghana can boast of such facilities, therefore, having such a gift from them is a privilege.

He noted that the facility would enhance their teaching and learning to keep up with global trends, as its technological provision would bring out innovation and critical thinking in the students.

Meanwhile, the extended family of Sarah also donated 2,000 pounds to help solve other school challenges.

St Paul’s Methodist Preparatory School was established in 1975 and currently has a pupil population of 820.

Students asked to be agents of change

Mr Stephen Amenu, the Kadjebi District STEM Co-ordinator, has asked students to be agents of change to influence society positively.

He said by taking their studies seriously, not indulging in violent acts, respecting one another’s views, and avoiding open defecation, among other things, their peers would emulate them, thereby making society conducive for habitation.

Mr Amenu gave this advice during the 2024 Citizenship Week celebration with students of the Kadjebi E.P. Central Junior High School (JHS), Kadjebi R.C. Primary and JHS, and the D/A Primary in the Oti Region on Tuesday.

Speaking on the theme: ‘Children, Let’s Build Ghana Together,’ and on Article 41 (C) of the 1992 Constitution, he advised the students to foster national unity and live-in harmony with others as election 2024 approached.

Referring to Article 41 (d), he said they needed ‘to respect the rights, freedoms and legitimate interest of others and generally refrain from acts that are detrimental to the welfare of other persons’.

Mr Ame
nu charged them to encourage their peers and family members to tolerate other people’s opinions and engaged in positive communication.

The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Co-ordinator advised the students ‘to protect and safeguard the environment’ as it was a civic responsibility.

They must also desist from taking hard drugs as it would ruin their future, he added.

Madam Gifty Obeng, the Headmistress of Kadjebi E.P Central JHS, commended the team for the programme through their timely and appropriate messaging.

The NCCE introduced the Citizenship Week celebration as part of the Annual Constitution Week celebration in 2012.

It seeks to remind basic school pupils of their responsibilities as active citizens and their roles to build a strong, vibrant and democratic Ghana.

The Kadjebi District Office of the NCCE is observing the week with students in 40 selected schools across the district.
