Abuja: The Science, Technology and the ARTS (S+T+ARTS) Afropean Intelligence, an initiative of the European Commission (EU), has urged African artists to explore Artificial Intelligence to showcase their talents. Mr Oscar Ekponimo, Managing Director, Gallery of Code, the host institution for the S+T+ARTS 4 Africa, made this announcement during a news conference in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ekponimo stated that the S+T+ARTS 4 Africa has opened a platform through which interested artists can apply for support. Ten selected applicants will receive cash rewards to aid their activities, with an expectation that they will use their talents to promote the intersection of science, technology, and arts (S+T+ARTS).
The programme offers a fully funded residency arrangement, providing a unique opportunity for the selected African artists to leverage the capabilities of AI to achieve greater success. The initiative aims to benefit artists with a vision and commitment to social impact, exploring themes of AI ethics, social justice, and inclusivity.
Ekponimo emphasized that the project is not merely about adding technological elements to existing practices but represents a fundamental shift in the perception of the arts’ role in society. The initiative seeks artists who are passionate about using their creative talents to address pressing social issues, challenge established narratives, and promote a more inclusive and equitable world.
Countries such as Nigeria, Egypt, Tunisia, South Africa, and the Democratic Republic of Congo have been chosen for the residency program. Artists from these nations are encouraged to apply online at the provided website by July 27.
The S+T+ARTS initiative, established by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, aims to foster collaborations among artists, scientists, engineers, and researchers.
