United Nigeria Airlines Secures Six Boeing 737-800 Aircraft in Partnership with Southwest Airlines


Lagos: United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) has signed a landmark aircraft sale and purchase agreement with Southwest Airlines, facilitating the delivery of six Boeing 737-800 aircraft. This strategic move aims to enhance UNA’s domestic, regional, and international operations.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Chairman of UNA, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, revealed that the signing ceremony was held at Southwest Airlines’ corporate campus in Dallas, USA, and was facilitated by SkyWorks Holdings, LLC. Okonkwo highlighted that this acquisition represents a significant milestone in the airline’s strategic growth plan.



Okonkwo emphasized that the Boeing 737-800 is known for its advanced technology, which improves performance, efficiency, and passenger comfort. He stated that this acquisition would not only broaden UNA’s operations but also enhance efficiency and capacity, thereby strengthening Nigeria’s position in global aviation.



The agreement with Southwest Airlines is seen as a groundbreaking opportunity for collaboration. Okonkwo noted that the aircraft’s fuel efficiency and advanced aerodynamics would help reduce operational costs and minimize environmental impact. With a versatile range of approximately 2,935 nautical miles, the aircraft will effectively serve both short-haul and medium-haul routes.



After four years of reliable operations, Okonkwo expressed confidence that the Boeing 737-800 upgrade would lead to a more profitable expansion. The new fleet will enable the airline to operate additional flights into approved domestic, regional, and international destinations, offering competitive fares and efficient point-to-point travel. The acquisition is also expected to generate direct and indirect jobs, boosting Nigeria’s economic development in line with President Bola Tinubu’s policies.



Okonkwo acknowledged the strong support from Boeing throughout the acquisition process and expressed optimism for continued collaboration with Southwest Airlines. Furthermore, UNA plans to acquire an additional four Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft, bringing the total fleet to ten by early 2027.



During the signing ceremony, Mr. Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing’s Vice-President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa, stated that the 737-800 aircraft would provide UNA with superior reliability and fuel efficiency. Mr. Anders Hebrandas, Chief Commercial Officer of SkyWorks Holdings, LLC, expressed satisfaction in partnering with Southwest Airlines and noted the aircraft’s potential in the growing African aviation market.
