U.S. Ambassador Praises Nigerian Media as Among the Best in Africa


Abuja: The United States (U.S.) Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, has commended the Nigerian media, describing it as well-informed and among the best in Africa. He made these remarks during a farewell dinner for the embassy’s departing Press Attach©, Gilbert Morton, and two other members of the Public Diplomacy section.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event also marked the departure of public diplomacy officers Victoria Cook and Katarina Ramos. Ambassador Mills highlighted the significant contributions of these officials in strengthening media relations and enhancing U.S.-Nigeria relations through media, cultural, and educational outreach.



Mills emphasized the U.S. Mission’s dedication to engaging with the Nigerian public on policies and goals, aiming to deepen diplomatic relations between the two nations. He praised the Nigerian press for its role in this engagement, acknowledging its commitment and care.



The ambassador specifically recognized Morton for his efforts in building media relationships and advancing educational outreach. Mills applauded the entire Public Diplomacy team at the embassy for promoting shared values between Nigeria and the U.S., emphasizing the importance of public outreach in ensuring these values endure.



Morton expressed gratitude for the media support during his tenure, characterizing his experience in Nigeria as professionally rewarding. He noted the robust Nigerian press and the embassy’s educational outreach as highlights of his time in the country.



Cook, who coordinated cultural engagements and ‘American Spaces’ programs, shared her appreciation for working in Nigeria and with U.S. government initiative alumni. She expressed her privilege in empowering local communities.



Ramos, who managed the youth portfolio, spoke about the potential of young Nigerians and expressed admiration for their talent and industriousness. Her experience in Nigeria was enriched by the culture and hospitality she encountered.
