TotalEnergies Initiates AFCON Trophy Tour in Lagos


Lagos: TotalEnergies, the principal sponsor of the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), has commenced the AFCON Trophy Tour in Lagos. The launch event, held at the company’s headquarters in Victoria Island, featured the initial public display of the gold-plated trophy, valued at four million dollars.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, Dr. Samba Seye, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Marketing Nigeria Plc, emphasized that the tour celebrates Africa’s shared passion for football. He highlighted that the collaboration between TotalEnergies and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) seeks to share the AFCON trophy with millions across five African countries.



“The trophy begins its exceptional journey in Lagos today, bringing together football fans to experience the excitement of Africa’s biggest football event. We are proud to host the first stage of the tour here in Lagos to kick off the 2025 tournament. Football represents energy, joy, and unity,” Dr. Seye stated.



Abdullahi Umar, General Manager, Retail and Cards, expressed that Nigeria’s deep connection with football is integral to its culture. He noted that the trophy tour would extend to Nigeria, Angola, South Africa, C´te d’Ivoire, and Morocco, spreading the AFCON spirit to millions of fans.



“We have unveiled the official AFCON trophy in Nigeria today. Twenty-four nations will compete for this gleaming symbol of continental glory. Nigerian fans now have a rare chance to see it closely, feel the energy, and dream big. This trophy represents unity and resilience,” Umar remarked.



Furthermore, Umar highlighted that TotalEnergies’ partnership with CAF since 2016 has reinforced its community engagement across Africa. He described the visit as a movement reflecting Nigerians’ love for football.



Mrs. Olubunmi Popoola-Mordi, Executive Director, Human Resources and Corporate Services, applauded Nigerians for their team spirit in supporting national teams. “This is about unity and bonding. We are proud the first stop is Nigeria. TotalEnergies continues to show confidence in football,” she said.



Marketing Manager Mrs. Olunfunmilayo Gombe expressed gratitude to stakeholders, CAF, the National Sports Commission, and the NFF for their collaboration. She also acknowledged media partners and fans, emphasizing Nigeria’s pride in hosting the tour’s first stop.
