Abuja: President Bola Tinubu has nominated Mr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat as the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). This was announced in a statement by Presidential Spokesperson, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ramat, aged 39, is an electrical engineer with a PhD in Strategic Management and has extensive administrative experience. In addition to Ramat’s nomination, President Tinubu approved two new commissioner appointments to the NERC board: Mr. Abubakar Yusuf as Commissioner for Consumer Affairs and Dr. Fouad Animashun as Commissioner for Finance and Management Services.
All nominations are subject to Senate confirmation. However, to prevent a leadership vacuum within the critical regulatory agency, the President has directed Ramat to assume office in an acting capacity until his Senate screening, as required by law.
Ramat previously served as Chairman of Ungogo Local Government Area in Kano State from 2021 to 2024. His educational background includes a PhD in Strategic Management from Lincoln University, a Master’s in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering from India, and a B.Eng in Electrical Engineering from Bayero University, Kano. His multidisciplinary expertise in STEM, strategic governance, and public sector innovation is expected to bring valuable insights to the Commission.
The President has urged the new appointees to utilize their knowledge and experience to effectively discharge their duties and contribute to advancing the administration’s vision for the power sector. These appointments are part of the Tinubu administration’s initiative to reform Nigeria’s energy sector and expedite universal electricity access.
