Abuja: The Drug-Free Arewa Movement (DFAM) has called on Northern leaders to join forces in combating the growing menace of illicit drug trafficking and substance abuse in the region. The Lead Convener of DFAM, Ibrahim Yusuf, made the call in his Sallah message to commemorate the 2025 Eid-el-Kabir in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Yusuf highlighted the devastating impact of drug abuse on the region, citing its effects on sustainable development, social vices, mental health crises, and the youth. He noted that the region’s future was being ravaged by the epidemic, with countless young people stranded, addicted, and unemployed.
Yusuf expressed his congratulations to the Muslim Ummah, particularly those in Northern Nigeria, on the occasion of Eid-el-Kabir. He emphasized that while celebrating, attention must be given to the devastation caused by illicit drug trafficking and substance abuse, which threatens the region’s future by crippling development and increasing social issues.
DFAM, Yusuf explained, is actively working with various community groups to reduce drug demand through policy advocacy, education, prevention programs, and recovery support. He urged the Northern States Governors’ Forum, traditional rulers, politicians, business leaders, and civil society to rise to the challenge and combat drug abuse collectively.
He stressed that drug abuse transcends political, religious, and ethnic lines, affecting every aspect of society. Yusuf urged stakeholders to take concrete actions, such as sending out-of-school children back to school, establishing functional rehabilitation centers, and creating economic opportunities for youths.
Yusuf also called on young people to resist drug abuse, as it destroys futures and communities. He assured those struggling with addiction that recovery is possible, with DFAM ready to assist. He concluded with a prayer for the region to rise drug-free and prosperous, guided by wise and dedicated leaders.
