Ritual Killings: Campaigner Advocates Death Penalty for Perpetrators

Abuja: A campaigner against ritual killings, Mr Sunday Oyinloye, has advocated the death penalty for perpetrators of the act. Oyinloye expressed concern over the increasing cases of ritual killings, stating that they have become a source of worry.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Oyinloye attributed the rise in ritual killings to the decay in family values, laziness, and the desire to attain wealth at any cost. He argued that the death penalty would serve as a significant deterrent. He criticized society, schools, families, religious bodies, and the government for not doing enough to tackle the issue.

Oyinloye emphasized the need for more discussions on ritual killings in the country, noting that the apparent indifference towards the menace over time has contributed to its increased incidence. He highlighted the absence of conversations about ritual killings, despite daily occurrences.

The campaigner urged relevant stakeholders to confront this issue and speak out against the trend, which often sees women and young girls as victims. He called on youths to be responsible, hardworking, and to embrace teachings from their places of worship while rejecting the belief in the get-rich-quick syndrome.

Oyinloye, a media executive, acknowledged the efforts of the police and other security agencies in tackling ritual killings. However, he noted that their efforts are hampered by the slow pace of the criminal justice administration system. He pointed out that the duty of the police and security agencies concludes upon arraigning a suspect in court.
