President Tinubu Mourns Media Icon Doyin Abiola, Celebrates Her Democratic Legacy

Lagos: President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Dr. Doyinsola Abiola, highlighting her legacy as a media icon and champion of democracy. Dr. Abiola, aged 82, was the wife of the late Chief MKO Abiola and died early on Wednesday.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, President Tinubu paid tribute to Dr. Abiola’s groundbreaking career in journalism and her steadfast commitment to democratic ideals. He reflected on her journey from starting as a reporter with the defunct Daily Sketch after graduating from the University of Ibadan in 1969, to becoming the first woman to edit a national newspaper and the first female Managing Director of a daily newspaper.

Dr. Abiola’s career reached a pinnacle in 1980 when she became the pioneer editor of the National Concord, a publication owned by her husband. She later ascended to the role of Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief, during which time she founded the Weekend Concord, a publication that set new benchmarks by centering people in its reporting approach.

President Tinubu also recalled her active role in the political landscape following the annulment of the June 12, 1993, election, which was won by her husband. Despite the challenges posed by the military junta, which led to the shutdown of the Concord Group, Dr. Abiola remained undeterred. She played a significant role in advocating for the validation of the election, demonstrating her commitment to democracy.

In his tribute, President Tinubu praised Dr. Abiola for her leadership, resilience, and dedication to truth, freedom, and justice. He extended his condolences to the Abiola and Aboaba families, her only daughter Doyinsola, and the governments and people of Lagos and Ogun States.
