Peter Mbah Defects to APC, Cites Lack of Recognition from PDP

Enugu: Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State has formally defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing a lack of recognition for the voice of his people by his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The governor announced his decision during a broadcast to the people of Enugu, marking a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mbah’s departure from the PDP was not an isolated move. He was accompanied by his immediate predecessor, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, as well as state and federal lawmakers, among others. The event was attended by notable leaders of the APC in the state, including former Gov. Sullivan Chime.

In his address, Gov. Mbah expressed gratitude to the PDP for its support during his election campaign but emphasized the necessity of making bold choices at critical moments. He stated, “Today, we have made the decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and join the All Progressives Congress.”

Mbah highlighted that this decision was not made in isolation. It involved the National and State Assembly members, State Executive Council members, and over 80 percent of party executives and appointees. He expressed disappointment that despite long-standing support from the South-East, the PDP often disregarded their voices.

The governor’s move to the APC is part of his search for an alternative platform where the interests of his people would be better represented and respected. He envisions a partnership with President Bola Tinubu, sharing a belief in disruptive transformation.

Vice-President Hashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and the APC National Working Committee, led by Chairman Prof Nentawe Yilwatda, are set to formally receive Gov. Mbah into the party, signaling a new chapter in Enugu State’s political dynamics.
