Abuja: The Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Ogunoye, has publicly addressed and dismissed circulating rumors regarding a potential attack by bandits on the historic community, particularly targeting St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, rumors have been spreading that suspected bandits had issued threats to launch an attack on the church. There were also claims suggesting that the Olowo’s palace had devised plans to organize a security summit in response to the alleged threat.
Oba Ogunoye, speaking to NAN via telephone, clarified that these rumors are intended to incite panic within Owo and surrounding areas. He emphasized the false nature of the information, stating, “It is fake news; there is nothing like that; we have been organizing security summit.”
The traditional ruler further suggested that the media platform responsible for the rumors might be seeking to increase traffic to its platform by disseminating such unfounded news. He reassured the community of the town’s peace, asserting that there is no cause for alarm.
Oba Ogunoye, who also serves as the Chairman of Ondo State Traditional Rulers Council, reiterated the peaceful state of the ancient town. The community’s concern is understandable, especially given the tragic incident three years ago when Saint Francis Catholic Church was attacked by gunmen, resulting in numerous casualties and injuries.
