Abuja: The Abuja branch of the Okuku Development Union (ODU) Women’s Wing has launched a N10 million fundraising initiative to install solar-powered streetlights throughout Okuku town in Imo. The unveiling of the project on Sunday in Abuja aims to strengthen security, improve night-time visibility, and drive development in the rural community.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mrs Ngozi Oguike, Chairperson of the ODU women’s wing, stated that the initiative is a grassroots response to years of governmental neglect, particularly in infrastructure. She emphasized the community’s desire to develop, secure streets, and reduce crime, while also urging government support in road repairs.
Mrs Oguike explained that the solar lighting project is expected to deter criminal activities at night and support economic and social activities across the community’s five villages. Mrs Patricia Ojiem, the matron and special adviser to the women’s group, highlighted the initiative as a significant step towards improving quality of life in Amapu, Uborji, Obogwu, Mgbolo, and Umuokire. She stressed the need for improved roads and called on the government to support their efforts.
Mr Martins Onuegbu, President of the ODU Abuja Branch, noted the security benefits of the project and appealed to government authorities for a proper road network linking Okuku to neighboring towns. He mentioned that the road, spanning only five to seven kilometers, could attract investors with adequate access and lighting, given the area’s fertile land and potential for agricultural and industrial growth.
The group urged public-spirited individuals, private organizations, and the Imo Government to support the project and other developmental efforts in Okuku.
