Lagos: Nollywood’s epic film ‘Amanyanabo: The Eagle King’ is set for release in cinemas on Sept. 12, its producers have said. The anticipated film promises to captivate audiences with its rich historical narrative and stellar cast.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the cinema release will be preceded by a global premiere in the United Kingdom on Aug. 29. The film’s trailer, released by veteran Nollywood star Ibinabo Fiberesima on Instagram, was introduced with the caption ‘The First of Its Kind! A movement, not just a movie’, hinting at the film’s unique approach and storytelling.
The star-studded blockbuster, directed by renowned filmmaker Fred Amata, is produced by Ibinabo Fiberesima, who is also a former president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN). The movie boasts a seasoned cast, featuring prominent names such as Nkem Owoh, Monalisa Chinda, Columbus Irosanga, Uju Okoli, and Ibinabo Fiberesima herself, who takes on a lead role in the film.
Set in 1892 Niger Delta, ‘Amanyanabo: The Eagle King’ chronicles the true-life story of King Ibanichuka, the last sovereign ruler of Okrika. The film portrays his struggle against colonial forces and internal betrayal, offering viewers a glimpse into the challenges and dynamics of pre-colonial African governance and social systems.
Filmed in the creeks and marshlands of Okrika, the production captures the essence of the Ijaw people, highlighting their resilience and the beauty of their homeland. The film aims to challenge stereotypes, showcasing an organized African city-state with a thriving political landscape.
