New york: President Bola Tinubu has reiterated the call for a proper representation of Nigeria on the United Nations Security Council. Tinubu made the call in his address at the general debate of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Tinubu was represented by the Vice-President, Sen. Kashim Shettima.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Tinubu emphasized the importance of Nigeria securing a permanent seat as part of a broader initiative of institutional reform. He argued that the United Nations would regain its relevance only when it mirrors the current world dynamics rather than outdated structures. Highlighting Nigeria’s transformation from a colony of 20 million people to a sovereign nation of over 236 million, Tinubu asserted Nigeria’s role as a stabilizing force in regional security and a committed partner in global peacekeeping.
The Nigerian leader expressed strong support for the UN80 Initiative of the Secretary-General and the resolution adopted by the Assembly on July 18, aiming to reform the United Nations system for improved efficiency and effectiveness. Tinubu underscored the necessity of rationalizing structures and eliminating redundant responsibilities to enhance the institution’s coherence and impact.
Tinubu further elaborated on the interconnectedness of global peace and security, emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to collective responsibility and cooperation with neighboring countries. He noted Nigeria’s significant contributions to United Nations peacekeeping operations, having participated in 51 out of 60 missions since 1960, and highlighted the country’s ongoing fight against insurgency with determination.
Reflecting on the broader struggle against violent extremism, Tinubu stressed that long-term victories are achieved through values and ideas rather than solely military tactics. He acknowledged the challenges posed by terrorism and emphasized Nigeria’s preference for tolerance and unity over division and hatred. Tinubu also addressed the importance of responding to regional conflicts and violence, drawing from Nigeria’s own experiences and advocating for a collective stand against acts of aggression and impunity.
