Moral Revival Key to National Growth, Says Cardinal Onaiyekan


Abuja: Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, has called for a moral revival across all sectors of society, highlighting that honesty, integrity, and accountability remain essential for rebuilding the nation. Onaiyekan made these remarks at the 10th anniversary celebration and fundraising event for the digitalisation project of Divine Love College, Kuchikau, Nasarawa State.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, Onaiyekan emphasized the necessity for both government and citizens to collaborate in promoting transparency, equity, and moral uprightness to drive national development. He pointed out the introduction of a new tax system, expressing that while citizens are willing to pay taxes, they wish to see tangible improvements in the nation facilitated by their contributions. The cardinal stressed that accountability should accompany development efforts.



Onaiyekan further stated that national transformation must commence with exemplary leadership and a renewed commitment to honesty and merit across public and private sectors. He urged the youth and all Nigerians to maintain their faith in hard work and integrity, advocating these values as the surest path to progress. He recollected a time when hard work guaranteed success and encouraged the youth not to lose hope, asserting that collective effort can lead to a better nation.



In addition to Onaiyekan’s remarks, the Principal of Divine Love College, Sr. Chidebelu Nwigwe, characterized the anniversary as a celebration of a decade of academic and moral excellence. She discussed the school’s ongoing digitalisation projects, such as a digital library, school clinic, and an examination hall, which align with the vision of hosting computer-based tests for WAEC, NECO, and JAMB in the future. Nwigwe emphasized the importance of education as the foundation for peace, productivity, and sustainable development, advocating for increased support in this area.



Students of the school shared their experiences, with Kanu Daniella describing her time at Divine Love College as enriching and inspiring, and expressing excitement about the new era of digitalisation enhancing their learning experience. Another student, Nongo Shadrack, noted that his brief time at the school had already left a strong impression, describing it as a home away from home and the best place to study.



The event included a thanksgiving mass, cultural performances, and fundraising activities aimed at supporting the school’s digitalisation project to modernize learning and administration.
