Minister Inaugurates Vehicular Air Emissions Testing Centre in Nasarawa


Nasarawa: Malam Balarabe Lawal, Minister of Environment, has inaugurated a Vehicular Air Emissions Testing Centre in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, as part of efforts to promote a healthier environment. Lawal, who was represented by Alhaji Mahmud Kambari, Permanent Secretary in the ministry, performed the inauguration in commemoration of the 2025 International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, the minister highlighted the significance of the inauguration, stating that it represents hope for cleaner air and a safer environment for all Nigerians. He emphasized that air pollution is a silent killer affecting the quality of life and health of citizens, contributing to respiratory problems, heart attacks, strokes, and even conditions like autism and dementia.



The minister stressed the urgency of addressing air pollution and noted that the centre will play a crucial role in regulating vehicle emissions, ensuring compliance with global environmental standards. The facility is set to become a hub for scientific testing, research, and policy enforcement, supporting Nigeria’s climate commitments and public health goals.



Lawal also mentioned that the centre, part of the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), aims to make Nasarawa State a model for Nigeria with advanced IT applications and training programmes for Vehicle Inspection Officers. The centre’s inauguration marks a significant step in the fight against air pollution.



Dr Margaret Elayo, Nasarawa State Commissioner for Environment, expressed the state’s commitment to collaborating on this initiative. Mrs Bahijjahtu Abubakar, Director of Pollution Control and Environmental Health, emphasized the collective responsibility to ensure the proper use and safety of the centre’s equipment, underscoring the importance of cleaner air for public health.
