Oddsmaker Mike Battaglia offers commentary on races set for Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017, at Churchill Downs:
GYPSY JANIE finished sixth in a race at this level at Keeneland and rates the edge with Robby Albarado back aboard for Wesley Ward. UNO SUENO broke her maiden here in September at today’s distance and can run well in here today. MY DARK SECRET is a definite contender.
BURGEMEISTER just missed last out and was claimed by Steve Asmussen who runs him back at the same level. He looks like a good bet to get the win with Ricardo Santana up. CASS IN STONE was third despite a troubled trip in a tough allowance race here in September. He drops back in for a tag today and will be hard to beat at this level. FUDGE PROUD has the speed to be dangerous.
PICKFORD flashed speed before fading in his debut here on opening day. Jimmy DiVito drops him in for a tag and Corey Lanerie picks up the mount. Look for a much better performance today. DREAMING OF JC was well backed in his debut at Kentucky Downs but had a rough trip and was never in contention. He is also capable of much better. MAGNANIMUS MAN moves up a notch in class off of the claim by Tom Amoss and has to be respected.
MINES AND MAGIC is a grades stakes placed filly who has been off since June but loves this track and figures to be very tough to beat despite the layoff. JULERETTE is riding a two race win streak and has the tactical speed to be in contention throughout. She is the one to catch. POLAR RIVER makes her U.S. debut for Brendan Walsh after winning four of eight in Dubai. She is training well and is a solid threat.
TOASTING MASTER is an extremely consistent runner who loves the Churchill Downs surface. He will be rallying from just off of the pace and looks best in this one. PISTONE STEEL is a speedy runner who was claimed last out by Brad Cox. He figures to go right to the lead and will be tough to catch. VACANZA has to be considered.
MISS MO MENTUM looked very good breaking her maiden here in September. She hooked Breedeers Cup winner Rushing Fall at Keeneland and may not have cared for the soft turf in that one. She looks best for Mark Casse and Lanerie. LENAMARIE was impressive in her maiden win and looks like a runner with a future. She is the one to beat. SASSY SIENNA fits in here.
ST PAIDRIG scored the upset win over this track last out and is capable of making it two in a row in this bottom claimer. KING CORAL exits the same race and is the one to beat. MOJO STREET rates a chance.
LESLEY MAY is a first timer by Tapit who is training well for Brendan Walsh. Give her the edge in what appears to be a wide open maiden race. PROMISSORY NOTE flashed speed in her debut afteer being well back at the windows and figures to improve. CHEEKY CHERUB makes her first start for Eddie Kenneally off of a series of solid works.
FIFTH TITLE had a very rough trip last out and was much the best in that one. He looks like a solid bet to make amends with Leparoux back aboard for Ian Wilkes. BINGO KITTEN has won four of eight this year. He faces tougher competition this afternoon but can be expected to run well again. HIGH NOON RIDER has won five races and fits in here.
BENEDICTION has a solid record over this track. He figures to get a good trip from just off of the pace and his best would make him a winner at this level. SMALL TOWN HERO drops to a career low claiming level and figures to be on or near the lead. He is the one to catch. DR. PHILAN will be running at the end and could add value to the gimmicks.
