Leadership Fellows Encourage Women to Pursue Impact Journalism


Lagos: The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) ReportWomen 2025 Female Reporters Leadership Programme (FRLP) fellows have called on female journalists to delve into impact journalism. The fellows made the call in interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), at the ReportWomen 2025 FRLP 6th Fellowship Induction and Award on Wednesday in Lagos.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, Aisha Gambo, a Senior Correspondent at NAN, urged female journalists to make an impact in society through the stories they publish for public consumption. Gambo emphasized that what is needed from women is the zeal and determination to change society for the better. She encouraged female journalists to build capacity, dare to dream, and give their voice to make an impact in society.



The FRLP fellow described the programme as tasking and interesting, but promised to report issues surrounding women and amplify their voices. Mrs. Christiana Alabi-Akande, the Managing Editor at DevReporting, expressed her commitment and passion for completing the programme, thanking mentors for their assistance in shaping female journalists to take the profession seriously. She advocated for practicing ethical journalism that brings solutions to national problems.



Rasheedat Iliyas, the Manager of News and Current Affairs at Harmony FM, called on female journalists to tell their stories, as no one else will. She emphasized the importance of women telling stories of their successes and struggles to ensure balanced representation and make women’s voices heard.



Jemilat Nasiru, a Staff Writer at The Cable, expressed gratitude for being selected for the training, describing it as a springboard for her career, especially in investigative journalism. She urged female journalists to build confidence, capacity, and competence to deliver on journalism practice. Nasiru highlighted the importance of women telling stories that only they can tell to ensure they are properly represented.



NAN reports that the ReportWomen! 2025 FRLP fellows include Aisha Gambo (NAN), Bilkis Abdulraheem (Bond FM), Chigozie Victor (Big Cabal Media), and Christiana Alabi-Akande (DevReporting), among others. The agency also reported that Alabi-Akande won the first prize of a laptop and N200,000 cash, Iliyas came second with a laptop and N100,000 cash, while Nasiru came third with a laptop and N50,000 cash.
