Lagos Govt. Collaborates with Lekki Residents for Fire Safety and Environmental Initiative


Lagos: The Lagos State Ministry of Environment has partnered with the Lekki Estate Residents and Stakeholders Association (LERSA) to conduct a fire safety training and tree planting event in Sangotedo. The event featured live demonstrations on the use of fire extinguishers and practical tips for effectively responding to fire emergencies.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the initiative aimed to promote environmental sustainability by planting ten trees and highlighting the importance of preserving nature within urban communities. Dr. Lasisi Adedoyin, Deputy Director in the Ministry, emphasized the need for fire risk assessments in homes and offices. He explained the different types of fire extinguishers and stressed the importance of purchasing them from authorized dealers.

Adedoyin advised residents to service their fire extinguishers twice a year and familiarize themselves with escape routes and emergency drills for effective evacuation during fire incidents. He also highlighted the importance of stay
ing low during a fire to reduce smoke exposure and urged residents to prioritize fire safety alongside security measures.

Mr. Hammed Lasisi, a firefighter with Lagos Fire and Rescue Services, reported that over 1,000 fire-related deaths occur annually in the state. He stressed the importance of memorizing emergency numbers 112 and 767 for quick response and warned against using uncertified extinguishers and fire blankets.

Alhaja Sulyman Bello, LERSA President, advocated for the integration of fire prevention knowledge with environmental sustainability to prevent avoidable losses. He encouraged residents to adopt tree planting and certified fire safety tools, including regularly serviced extinguishers.

Mr. Stanley Iringe-Koko, Chairman of Diamond Estate, praised the collaboration between the government and communities. He emphasized that initiatives like tree planting are critical steps toward long-term environmental health and safer living conditions, underlining the impact of today’s actions on tomorrow’s
habitability.
