Lagos City Senior College Triumphs in 10th NILDS National Quiz

Lagos: The Lagos City Senior College, Yaba, representing Lagos Education District IV, has emerged as the state-level winner of the 10th National Quiz Competition on Legislature, Democracy, and Governance.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the competition, organized by the National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), took place on Tuesday at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Akoka. The event saw participation from the six education districts within Lagos State.

The quiz, which was fiercely contested, involved senior secondary school students competing on topics related to democracy, civic responsibility, governance, and legislative knowledge. Lagos City Senior College clinched the first position with 50 points, followed by Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu from Education District II, as the first runner-up with 45 points, and State Senior High School, Ibereko from Education District V, as the second runner-up with 30 points.

The victory of Lagos City Senior College students qualifies them to represent Lagos State at the South-West regional level of the competition, scheduled to be held on October 30th in Akure, Ondo.

Prof Abubakar Olanrewaju, former Minister of National Planning and Director-General of NILDS, expressed satisfaction with the students’ performance, highlighting the institute’s mission of enhancing democratic and legislative education among youths. Represented by Mrs. Abisola Ojogiwa, Chief Accounts Officer at NILDS, he stated that the competition aims to broaden civic knowledge and deepen students’ understanding of the history, structure, and processes of the nation’s legislature.

The National Quiz Competition, launched by NILDS in 2016, initially included schools in the Federal Capital Territory. However, following a directive from the Governing Council in 2022, the initiative expanded nationwide. Since then, it has developed into an annual platform that promotes civic awareness, legislative literacy, and democratic education among students, supported by partnerships with ministries and education stakeholders.

The 2025 Edition marks the 10th overall and the fourth to be held at a national level, reflecting NILDS’ dedication to mentoring a generation of civic-conscious students through academic competition. Olanrewaju congratulated the winners and finalists, encouraging them to enhance their knowledge and strive to bridge their knowledge gap in legislative practices and democratic development.

Ojogiwa, speaking in her capacity, urged the students to pursue deeper civic engagement to strengthen their understanding of democracy, legislative practices, and government operations. She emphasized that the competition is intended to stimulate students’ interest in governance and politics, encouraging youth to take proactive roles in democracy and development.

Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, also commended NILDS for its inspiring initiative and consistency. Represented by Mrs. Oluwatoyin Williams, Director of Child Guidance, School Counseling, and Special Education Units, he noted that the competition motivates students to learn more about governance issues.

Mr. Jubril Ahmed, a teacher from Lagos City Senior College, expressed delight at the students’ victory, attributing their success to perseverance, hard work, and focus. He emphasized the need for more commitment as the students prepare for the zonal level competition.

Certificates of participation were awarded to schools that participated, with winners of bonus questions receiving notebooks. Schools represented at the competition included Lagos City College, Yaba; Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu; and Vetland Senior Grammar School, Agege.
