Geneva: Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) says the Federal Government is committed to improving social security, health, and safety of Nigerian workers at workplaces. Mr. Oluwaseun Faleye, NSITF Managing Director, said this at the ongoing 113th session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Switzerland.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Faleye stated that the Fund is currently conducting Occupational Health and Safety (OSH) audits at workplaces to ensure the safety of workers in alignment with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) convention. He emphasized the collaboration with employers to enhance workplace safety and address health and safety issues comprehensively.
Faleye highlighted the importance of participating in international platforms like the ILC to broaden knowledge and capabilities in implementing advanced standards related to Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE). This engagement aims to apply these standards domestically and strengthen the local ecosystem.
The NSITF is focused on creating conducive workplaces and ensuring timely compensation for workers who suffer injuries. The Fund’s mandate includes promoting decent work and enhancing HSE responsibilities to reduce workplace injuries significantly.
Efforts are also underway to integrate the informal sector into the scheme, recognizing the vast opportunities available. Faleye noted positive responses from the sector and underscored the ILO conference as an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas, build capacity, and foster collaboration with the ILO.
