Gov. Bala Mohammed Affirms Commitment to PDP Amidst Defection Concerns

Abuja: Gov. Bala Mohammed, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, has confirmed his continued allegiance to the PDP amidst concerns of defection. Speaking to journalists after the inaugural meeting of the Publicity and Communications Sub-Committee for the upcoming PDP convention in Abuja, Mohammed assured that he is not leaving the party.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mohammed emphasized his commitment to the PDP, stating that his state remains united and free from division. Although concerned about some party members defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mohammed acknowledged that he has no authority over the decisions of his peers due to their equal status. He highlighted ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of these defections, which could have been more significant without behind-the-scenes discussions.

Mohammed noted that some defections were influenced by coercion and strategic calculations, and he refrained from criticizing his colleagues for their decisions. He urged those leaving the PDP to refrain from undermining the party. On the topic of litigations related to the party’s national convention, Mohammed assured that the leadership is actively addressing these issues, which he believes are intended to weaken the party. He expressed concern about the impact on members at the National Assembly.

Addressing rumors about Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State potentially leaving the party, Mohammed stated that Mbah has yet to disclose any intentions to leave and has provided assurances of his position. Mohammed also confirmed that Gov. Siminalaye Fubura of Rivers, the Deputy Chairman of the party’s governors’ forum, remains a member of the PDP.

Regarding speculation about former President Goodluck Jonathan contesting the 2027 election under the PDP banner, Mohammed expressed satisfaction with the continued association of prominent figures with the party. He encouraged party members not to be discouraged by defections and reiterated that the national convention scheduled for November 15 in Ibadan will proceed as planned, asserting that no obstacles will prevent its occurrence.
