Abuja: The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has proclaimed that good governance is essential for any democracy, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability at all government levels.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, in his message to commemorate the 2025 Democracy Day, highlighted that the day signifies the collective commitment of Nigerians to democracy, freedom, and justice. Okoh emphasized that Nigeria’s abundant resources should be utilized to tackle issues such as poverty, unemployment, and inequality, while also focusing on infrastructure development.
He reflected on the legacy of the 1993 elections, describing it as a beacon of hope and a testament to the nation’s enduring democratic spirit. Okoh encouraged Nigerians to embrace unity, peace, and mutual respect, while firmly opposing religious intolerance and violence in all its forms.

Okoh further urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enhance its systems and processes to boost electoral transparency and public trust. He advocated for the protection of free speech, peaceful assembly, and press freedom, encouraging the government to engage citizens constructively for inclusive solutions to national challenges.
On this significant day, CAN expressed prayers for the peace, unity, and progress of Nigeria. Okoh called on Nigerians to remain dedicated to building a just, inclusive, and prosperous nation that honors the sacrifices of democratic heroes. The association also commended the efforts of the government, security agencies, and citizens in upholding the values of democracy and national cohesion.
