Abuja: The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has cautioned motorists and commuters against distracted driving and the dangerous practice of scooping fuel from fallen tankers, as part of its month-long sensitisation campaign. The Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, delivered the warning during the continuation of the 2025 Ember Months Sensitisation Campaign.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mohammed, represented by the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) Olusegun Ogungbemide, recalled that the corps had officially flagged off this year’s sensitisation exercise on Monday, Oct. 20, with a press conference in Abuja. He added that the exercise would continue into early next year and aimed to directly engage the motoring public on the need to comply with traffic rules.
The ongoing campaign seeks to promote safe driving habits, especially during the year’s peak travel period. Mohammed emphasized the importance of avoiding distracted driving and urged everyone to take responsibility for their own safety. The message extends to commuters, who are encouraged to caution drivers engaging in risky behavior on the road.
The FRSC Corps Marshal highlighted a concerning statistic: more than 3,000 people lost their lives in road traffic crashes across the country between January and September 2025. This alarming figure underscores the need for renewed caution among road users as vehicular movement increases during the ember months.
Mohammed also stressed the importance of defensive driving, advising motorists against insisting on the right of way or engaging in road rage. He urged road users to adopt defensive driving practices to reduce the rate of accidents on highways.
In addition, the FRSC Corps Marshal warned Nigerians against rushing to scoop fuel whenever tankers fall, describing it as a deadly act. He advised the public to stay away from such scenes to prevent potential disasters, emphasizing that many lives are lost in such incidents.
