FRSC Commends FMC Abuja for Action Against Alleged Negligent Staff Members

Abuja: The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has praised the management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Jabi, Abuja, for taking decisive steps against staff accused of neglecting an accident victim. The commendation came from the FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, via a statement issued by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the victim was rescued from an accident scene in the nation’s capital by a good Samaritan and taken to FMC Abuja for treatment. Mohammed highlighted the importance of timely and adequate medical care in reducing mortality rates and improving outcomes for crash victims. He urged healthcare providers to adopt a proactive approach to emergencies to save lives.

Mohammed condemned the frequent rejection of crash victims by hospitals from FRSC operatives. He noted that the National Road Traffic Regulations (2024) specifically penalize hospitals that refuse crash victims, with detailed provisions for punishment for negligence or misconduct related to handling crash victims.

‘We urge healthcare providers to prioritize the welfare of crash victims and uphold the highest standards of professionalism to save their lives,’ he stated. The FRSC chief reiterated the Corps’ commitment to collaborate with healthcare providers and other stakeholders to enhance road safety and save lives.

The commendation extended to the good Samaritan who rescued the victim, with Mohammed calling on citizens to emulate this sense of patriotism by promoting safety, discipline, and professionalism. This, he believes, will make a difference and save more lives.

NAN reports that the FMC management has placed eight staff members, including four doctors, two nurses, and two attendants, under investigation for alleged professional negligence. The hospital management assured that any staff member found guilty of dereliction of duty would be held accountable. The hospital’s Head of Clinical Services, Bioku Muftau, confirmed that the accident victims allegedly abandoned by hospital personnel, as seen in a viral video, have been treated and discharged. Muftau added that the patient with a head injury featured in the video was stabilized and discharged the same day he arrived at the facility.
