Foundation Launches Multi-Million Naira Initiative for Vulnerable Women in Abuja

Abuja: The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria Foundation (PSNF) has initiated a groundbreaking humanitarian programme aimed at supporting vulnerable women in underserved communities through health education and relief supplies. The outreach, which marks the foundation’s first of its kind, commenced in Lugbe, Abuja, with the goal of enhancing access to healthcare information and essential resources in areas where such facilities are limited.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mr. Munir Elelu, the Director of PSNF and a Public Health Pharmacist, emphasized that the project is aligned with the foundation’s core mission of serving the vulnerable and saving lives. Elelu highlighted the focus on preventive health education, addressing common challenges encountered by women in the community. The PSNF team provided comprehensive talks on various health topics to equip the women with necessary information before offering assistance.

Elelu elaborated on the strategic choice of targeting women, considering them the most vulnerable group that upholds the family structure. The talks covered hygiene, nutrition, safe drug use, and methods to avoid drug side effects. The relief packages distributed included food, sanitary pads, and over-the-counter medicines, aiming to meet both nutritional and sanitary needs.

Ms. Ijeoma Nwankwo, PSNF’s Programme Manager, underscored the importance of menstrual hygiene awareness, explaining that many women face challenges managing their menstrual cycles. The PSNF event was organized to educate women on proper menstrual hygiene practices, reinforcing general hygiene and cleanliness. Nwankwo cautioned against self-medication, stressing the role of pharmacists in guiding women on proper medication use.

Bilkisu Saliu, a widow, shared her appreciation for the foundation’s outreach programme, which came as a surprise and a blessing amidst her struggles as a single parent. Initially skeptical, Saliu attended the event and expressed her gratitude for the assistance received, hoping the foundation continues to impact lives positively.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Foundation serves as the humanitarian arm of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, implementing projects to promote healthier living within communities.
