FIDA Advocates for Non-Custodial Sentencing and Skill Development for Juveniles

Abakaliki: The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Ebonyi Branch has proposed the adoption of Non-Custodial Sentencing for juveniles involved in legal conflicts. Mrs. Oluchukwu Ik-Odeh, the state’s Chairperson of FIDA, voiced this suggestion during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ik-Odeh emphasized the importance of reforming young offenders through community service, rehabilitation, and societal reintegration. She highlighted that adopting non-custodial measures would assist these juveniles in becoming constructive members of society. The approach aims to tackle the underlying issues of their behavior through counseling, education, and skill acquisition programs, often incorporating community service.

Ik-Odeh elaborated that activities such as sweeping court premises, washing cars, farm work, and fetching water for a month could help juveniles acknowledge their mistakes. She raised concerns about the growing involvement of children in theft and exploitation by adults, attributing this to parental neglect. She argued against lengthy custodial sentences for minor offenses, suggesting instead short-term community-based punishments.

The Chairperson called for collaboration with relevant agencies to enhance life skills for juveniles in custody. She urged parents and family members to actively participate in the rehabilitation process to mitigate criminal behavior and prevent recidivism.

Ik-Odeh praised the current Ebonyi State administration under Gov. Francis Nwifuru and advocated for prioritizing the safety and emotional security of children.
