Abuja: The Federal Government is intensifying efforts to ensure Nigerians get fair value for their money through accurate quantity measurements in goods and services. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Amb. Nura Rimi, stated this during an official visit to various facilities within the city center.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Rimi, represented by Mr. Dafang Sule, the Director of Federal Produce Inspectorate Service, led officials from the Weights and Measures Department of the Ministry on an inspection tour. Some of the facilities visited included the NNPC mega station, NNPC by Olusegun Obasanjo Way, Zone 1, Conoil, Gransquare, and the Arab Contractors site in Abuja.
Rimi emphasized the purpose of the visit was to ensure these facilities maintained strict compliance with approved standards of measurement, safeguarding consumer protection and enhancing revenue generation for the government. He underlined the administration’s commitment through its Renewed Hope Agenda to protect consumer interests.
Mr. Bamidele Olajide, the Director of Weights and Measures, noted that the surveillance was part of the department’s annual nationwide compliance exercise. He stressed the importance of protecting consumers from being shortchanged and ensuring entities comply with government regulations regarding accurate quantity dispensation.
Olajide confirmed that most premises visited demonstrated substantial compliance with the required standards. He also highlighted ongoing efforts to bolster the department’s role under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), with support from the National Assembly and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
Deputy Director of Surveillance, Mr. Muktar Salim, explained that the department operates an open complaint system through its website and call centers, encouraging consumers to report suspected inaccuracies.
At the Arab Contractors site in Wuye, project manager Mr. Gamal Abdelrahman praised the surveillance team’s professionalism, confirming their weighing bridge passed the test. Similarly, Mr. Isah Iyaji, Manager of the NNPC Filling Station along Olusegun Obasanjo Way, Zone 1, commended the initiative and provided technical advice to CNG vehicle users.
The ministry’s officials also inspected the butchery section and rice stalls at Grand Square Supermarket and Stores in the Central Business District, ensuring compliance with standard measures. The ministry vowed to continue training operators of weighing equipment and enforcing sanctions on defaulters as part of ongoing efforts to protect consumers and uphold trade standards across Nigeria.
