Abuja: The ECOWAS Court of Justice has announced the delivery of 487 judgments and 147 rulings from 748 cases filed since its establishment in 2001, underscoring its commitment to justice and human rights across the region. The Community Court shared this update in Abuja, highlighting its 24-year history in regional legal redress.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the ECOWAS Court emphasized its role as the principal judicial organ for legal redress and human rights protection. The court’s decisions have significantly impacted the West African subregion, reinforcing its dedication to justice.
By July 2025, the court conducted 1,633 sessions, reviewed 61 judgment applications, issued 66 orders, delivered 43 decisions on judgment revisions, and provided 8 advisory opinions. These actions highlight the court’s central role in the region’s judicial framework.
In the first half of this year, the court registered 34 new cases, delivered 42 judgments, and rendered three rulings over 79 sessions. Four orders were issued, one decision on judgment revision was delivered, and 112 cases are pending. The court reported no advisory opinion requests or applications but continues to register new cases.
The court noted its contribution to regional jurisprudence and fostering a just and democratic West Africa by holding member states accountable and providing redress for individuals and communities. Its decisions have influenced national legal reforms and promoted institutional accountability.
Under President Ricardo Cl¡udio Monteiro Gon§alves, the court champions equity, fairness, and justice. The court also announced its annual judicial recess, with activities resuming in September.
