Abuja: The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, has warned sports journalists against sensational and unverified reports, emphasizing that media credibility directly affects national unity and sports development. Speaking at the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) 60th anniversary on Thursday, Dikko urged journalists to prioritize accuracy over speed in the competitive information age.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Dikko emphasized the importance of teamwork and responsibility, stating, “If we succeed, we succeed together; and if we fail, it is also together. Our doors remain open, but truth must guide us.” He condemned false claims alleging that FIFA and CAF funds were released to the NFF, describing them as misleading narratives that could breed public mistrust and division.

Dikko challenged media professionals to rebuild confidence through fact-based reporting that promotes unity, rather than fueling misinformation or damaging the nation’s sporting image. He urged reporters to focus on agenda-setting stories that inspire patriotism and support national teams, especially as the Super Eagles chase FIFA World Cup qualification.

The Diamond Jubilee, themed ‘The Power of Sports Media: Honouring Its Legacy, Shaping the Future,’ includes lectures, awards, and discussions on SWAN’s six-decade contribution to sports journalism. Present at the ceremony were the NIS Director-General, Comrade Philip Shaibu, and the Wife of the Senate President, who both praised SWAN’s role in fostering unity through responsible reporting.

The week-long anniversary continues with sessions on ethical journalism, sports media evolution, and strategies for using credible reporting to advance sports development in Nigeria.
