Abuja: A Civil Society Organisation (CSO), Initiative for Leadership Development and Change (ILDC), has lauded President Bola Tinubu for reiterating commitment to the creation of state police.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Tinubu stated that the creation of a decentralised police force has become inevitable while receiving a delegation of prominent citizens from Katsina State led by Gov. Dikko Radda at the presidential villa in Abuja.
The President of the CSO, Chief Ugochukwu Nnam, made the commendation in an interview with NAN in Abuja. Nnam emphasized that state police was crucial to addressing insecurity in the country. He expressed confidence in Tinubu’s ability to combat insecurity with the proposed creation of state police.
Nnam urged all Nigerians to support Tinubu’s reforms, particularly in security, for a progressive and stable Nigeria. He highlighted that indigenous policing, or state police, is essential for tackling insecurity at the state level. The CSO expressed its support for the President and any state governor who embraces this idea to end insecurity in Nigeria.
Nnam also criticized the politicization of the proposed state police, stating that the poor security situation in some states made its creation necessary. He argued that deploying security personnel familiar with local terrain and culture would enhance the grassroots security network.
Additionally, Nnam commended the Minister of Interior, Mr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for unveiling a plan to arm selected private security companies and licence private firefighting services. He noted that these reforms align with Tinubu’s strategy to combat insecurity and modernize emergency response in the country. While acknowledging that many proposals would require legislative approval, Nnam believes they aim to strengthen national security.
