Abuja: The National Union of Civil Engineering Construction, Furniture and Wood Workers (NUCECFWW) has called on the Federal Government and construction companies to adopt green cement as part of efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change. Stephen Okoro, President of NUCECFWW, made this appeal during the 7th National Quadrennial Delegates Conference in Abuja, titled ‘Building Trade Unions’ Future through Strategic Organising and Investments.’
According to News Agency of Nigeria, green cement offers a sustainable alternative to conventional Portland cement, significantly reducing carbon emissions. Okoro emphasized that transitioning to a low- or zero-carbon economy, known as a just transition, should minimize negative impacts on workers and their communities.
Okoro highlighted that the Minister of Works, David Umahi, recently reaffirmed the government’s policy to prioritize concrete road construction over asphalt. This shift led to the revocation of several construction contracts, resulting in job losses and financial challenges for some companies. The union supports concrete road construction in challenging terrains but advocates for a gradual transition to ensure employers acquire the necessary equipment and workers receive appropriate training.
Okoro also urged the government to support industry employers in training artisans to ensure efficient employment and productivity. He reflected on Nigeria’s acknowledgment of climate change since 1972 and questioned the country’s progress in implementing strategies to address its impacts.
The union recommends that government agencies responsible for environmental control enforce climate change sanctions and fund grassroots campaigns for mitigation. Transparency in climate change policies, reforestation efforts, and compensation for affected individuals are also essential.
With the rising incidence of building collapses, Okoro stressed the urgent need for regulatory compliance to prevent further loss of life and property. He called for a comprehensive approach by planning authorities to eliminate compromises and ensure safety in the construction industry.
