Civil Society Applauds Security Leaders Ribadu and Buba for Innovative Approaches

Abuja: The National Civil Society Council of Nigeria (NCSCN) has commended the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, Sen. Shehu Buba, for their pragmatic approach to tackling insecurity in the country.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Amb. Blessing Akinlosotu, Executive Director of NCSCN, highlighted these commendations during a briefing in Abuja. The Council’s Directorate of Security and Intelligence Matters has been documenting developments in Nigeria’s security architecture since the commencement of 2025 operations to assess progress and rate performances of key actors.

“Our findings have been very interesting and encouraging, especially from the offices of the National Security Adviser and that of the Chairman, Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence,” Akinlosotu stated. The significant improvements in the security sector over the past year are attributed to the policies and strategies implemented through the joint efforts of the Executive and Legislative arms of government.

Akinlosotu emphasized that, unlike many policymakers who rely solely on hardline measures, Ribadu and Buba have consistently advocated for combining kinetic and non-kinetic approaches. This strategy has led to a significant reduction in violent incidents across Nigeria. The NSA’s oversight and Sen. Buba’s legislative support have fostered dialogue and negotiations, effectively addressing conflicts such as farmers/herders clashes and inter-communal violence.

However, Akinlosotu expressed concern over detractors misinterpreting the duo’s approach, labeling them as weak or alleged allies of bandits. He noted that such backlashes and misinterpretations are common against performing leaders and administrators. The Civil Society Council aims to counter these unsubstantiated allegations that undermine the achievements of Ribadu and Buba.

Global evidence supports the effectiveness of dialogue and non-kinetic methods in addressing security challenges. Akinlosotu cited research conducted in the Lake Chad Basin by UNIDIR and ISS in 2023, which confirmed the success of these approaches. The establishment of crisis negotiation units by agencies like the FBI and Nigeria’s amnesty programs further prove that negotiated peace can restore stability.

Akinlosotu concluded by urging Ribadu and Buba to intensify their efforts, as there is still significant progress to be made. “While once again commending their laudable achievements, we enjoin them to redouble efforts and be more proactive, as the quest for satisfactory national security is yet to be attained,” he said.
