Abuja: China has donated one million dollars to Nigeria in support of people affected by the recent devastating floods across the country. The support was formalized at a ceremony in Abuja, with the signing of exchange of notes between the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning and Chinese officials.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the donation was presented by Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, who emphasized China’s solidarity with Nigeria during this challenging period. He noted that both nations have simultaneously faced natural disasters, expressing condolences for the lives lost and affirming China’s support. Ambassador Yu highlighted the mutual resilience of both countries and expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to rebuild under the leadership of its government.
Yu also underscored the strengthening relationship between China and Nigeria, rooted in mutual respect and equality. He pointed to significant progress in trade, investment, and multilateral cooperation between the two countries. The ambassador mentioned President Xi Jinping’s recent announcement of zero-tariff treatment on numerous tariff lines for African countries, including Nigeria, which aims to boost Nigerian exports, create jobs, and support economic growth.
Senator Atiku Bagudu, Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, acknowledged the timeliness of the assistance, aimed at communities worst hit by the floods. He stated that the intervention complements ongoing government efforts in providing relief and rebuilding livelihoods in affected areas. Bagudu assured that the ministry, in collaboration with other relevant bodies, would ensure effective implementation of the project through a transparent framework.
He welcomed the joint monitoring and evaluation mechanism established with the Chinese embassy, which aims to ensure transparency, accountability, and strengthen humanitarian and development cooperation. The minister expressed that China’s support exemplifies goodwill and the growing cooperation between the two nations across various sectors, including trade, infrastructure, technology, and agriculture.
Bagudu conveyed Nigeria’s appreciation to China for the gesture, reflecting the enduring bilateral relations based on mutual respect and a shared vision for sustainable development. He reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to working closely with China to guarantee the project’s success and looked forward to further initiatives promoting prosperity and resilience.
