Abuja: Veteran showbiz maestro, Charles Oputa, widely recognized as CharlyBoy, has expressed no regrets about the path he has chosen in life, including his enduring commitment to activism, as he marks his 75th birthday. The renowned social activist shared his reflections in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, CharlyBoy, who once aspired to become a priest, left the seminary after a year, choosing instead to pursue a career in music and embrace street culture. This decision diverged significantly from the expectations of his late father, a legal luminary, who had high hopes for his son. Despite rebelling against parental pressure and refusing a lucrative job at Mobil Oil and Gas, a decision that strained father-son relations, CharlyBoy remains resolute in his choices.
CharlyBoy emphasized the importance of learning from life’s challenges, acknowledging that while he may have faced difficulties, each experience contributed to his growth and fulfillment. He expressed gratitude for his upbringing, particularly the moral values imparted by his father, which have guided him through life’s journey. CharlyBoy described himself as content and humble, valuing simplicity over material wealth.
On his birthday, CharlyBoy chose a quiet celebration, spending the day at home, accepting phone calls and messages from well-wishers. He also revealed plans to release his memoir, “999,” which will detail his life’s journey, including personal struggles, family conflicts, and multiple marriages before the age of 36.
Charles Oputa, born on June 19, 1950, is the son of former Supreme Court Justice Chukwudifu Oputa. He is a prominent figure in the entertainment industry, known for his distinctive lifestyle, political views, and media contributions. CharlyBoy has been a vocal advocate for the masses, often clashing with authorities in his fight for justice. Notable efforts include advocating for military pensioners and leading the “Our Mumu Don Do” movement, which called on President Muhammadu Buhari to return to office or resign in 2017.
