CDS Encourages NYSC Members to Promote Peace and National Unity

Ilorin: The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, has urged members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to be advocates of peace, unity, and national development across the country. This call was made during a Defence-Media Town Hall Engagement at the Kwara Orientation Camp in Ilorin.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the CDS was represented by Commander Godwin Egbunu, Staff Officer, Defence Media Operations, Defence Headquarters, at the event. The engagement aimed to fortify civil-military relations and enhance national security awareness among Nigerian youths. Musa highlighted the importance of deepening the understanding between the Armed Forces and the civilian population, particularly the youth, who are seen as future leaders of the nation.

The CDS emphasized that national security is a collective responsibility, requiring active participation from all citizens. He pointed out that corps members hold a strategic position in contributing to peacebuilding and national unity. “Sec
urity is not the business of the military alone – it is everyone’s business. Your vigilance, patriotism, and responsible use of information can help prevent threats and sustain public confidence,” he stated.

Musa also cautioned corps members about the dangers of misinformation and fake news, especially on social media, which can distort military operations and create undue panic. He urged them to verify information before sharing it to avoid damaging national morale or endangering troops.

Furthermore, the CDS acknowledged the critical role of the NYSC in promoting national integration since its inception in 1973, describing it as a significant pillar of unity in Nigeria’s history. He encouraged corps members to leverage their Community Development Service (CDS) groups and social media platforms to foster unity and positive storytelling about Nigeria.

He also encouraged graduates interested in military careers to explore opportunities in the Armed Forces through the Direct Short Service Commission and other
military corps. Musa reiterated the armed forces’ dedication to protecting lives and property nationwide while promoting partnerships that enhance peace, stability, and youth empowerment.

The State Coordinator of NYSC, Mr. Olaoluwa Onifade, praised the Defence Headquarters for organizing the town hall engagement, which he described as a morale-boosting initiative that strengthens national unity and patriotism. Onifade noted that the presence of senior military officers reassured corps members and motivated them to serve diligently.

Corps member Yusuf Abdullazeez expressed appreciation to the Defence Headquarters and other security agencies for ensuring their safety during their service year in Kwara. He noted that the lectures on security and misinformation had boosted his confidence, reaffirming the state’s security for corps members.

Another corps member, Chizaram Iwunzei, shared that the engagement inspired her to consider a military career, emphasizing that the discussions on patriotism and security st
rengthened her commitment to serving Nigeria.

The event featured presentations on the armed forces’ activities, the responsible use of social media, and guidance for corps members on making positive contributions during their service. Commander Egbunu and Maj. Ayorinde Omojokun provided insights on personal security and career opportunities in the military.
