Board Concludes Deliberations on 231 Disciplinary Cases in Nigerian Correctional Service

Abuja: The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) has announced the conclusion of deliberations on 231 disciplinary cases involving personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS). The announcement was made by the Service Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Umar, in Abuja.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the cases were presented to the board by the Disciplinary and General Purpose Committee (BDGPC) after comprehensive investigations and adherence to due process. The board has approved various disciplinary actions, demonstrating its commitment to enforcing discipline and maintaining the integrity of the service.

Umar reported that, following a thorough review, 15 personnel were dismissed from service for serious misconduct and violation of service regulations. Additionally, 59 officers faced demotions due to confirmed breaches of professional standards, while 42 personnel received written warnings as corrective measures.

In a positive turn for some, the board exonerated 16 personnel who were found not guilty of the allegations against them. Currently, seven staff members are on suspension as investigations continue to determine their level of involvement in a particular case.

In a notable decision, one officer was suspended and recommended for handover to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for prosecution because of the severity of the offence. Furthermore, eight personnel were compulsorily retired, and one officer was ordered to repay earnings received while holding a rank they were not entitled to.

Umar quoted the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, reaffirming the ministry’s dedication to upholding high ethical and professional standards across all levels. Similarly, the Controller of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, emphasized the importance of public cooperation and assured that disciplinary actions would be administered fairly, in strict accordance with established rules and procedures.
