Abuja: The Abuja Chapter of the Animal Science Association of Nigeria (ASAN) has hosted a quiz competition aimed at inspiring young Nigerians to consider livestock agriculture as a viable career path. The event, held in the capital city, provided a platform for students to demonstrate their knowledge in animal science and agriculture, emphasizing the role of young Nigerians in the future of agriculture.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the theme of the competition was ‘Young Animal Scientist Secondary School Quiz Competition.’ Mr. John Taiwo, Chairman of ASAN Abuja, highlighted the significance of animal science as a leading field in agriculture, offering numerous career opportunities such as animal nutritionist, genetics and breeding specialist, and livestock entrepreneur. Taiwo, represented by Dr. Oluchi Agubosi from the University of Abuja, urged the youth to prepare for the responsibilities that await them in the sector.
Taiwo stressed the importance of young Nigerians as future guardians of food security, emphasizing the need for innovation in agriculture to meet the growing demand for nutritious food. Dr. Agubosi noted that agriculture and animal science play a crucial role in sustaining food security in Nigeria, and proactive management is essential for optimal production.
Agubosi expressed hope that resolving farmer-herder conflicts was a key reason behind the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD). She highlighted the role of animal science professionals in addressing these challenges, particularly through ranching to improve livestock feeding.
Mr. Victor Egbon from the FMLD revealed ongoing initiatives to address Nigeria’s food situation, including the Nigerian Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy. This strategy aims to rehabilitate abandoned grazing reserves to reduce herder-farmer clashes.
Dr. Azeezah Babalola, Public Relations Officer and Quiz Anchor, announced that the competition served as a precursor to an upcoming conference. The quiz aimed to inspire students to pursue careers in agriculture and animal science, which offer promising futures.
The event concluded with the presentation of participation certificates to the 15 competing schools from the Federal Capital Territory. Government Secondary School, Gwagwalada, secured the first position, scoring 65 points across six sessions and winning a cash prize of N125,000.
