Abuja: The Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF) has expressed its commendation for President Bola Tinubu’s decision to confer a posthumous national honour on the late journalist James Bagauda Kaltho. The recognition highlights the ongoing commitment to acknowledging the vital role of journalists in society.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, AMDF’s Press Freedom Manager, Mrs. Zhiroh Jatau, emphasized that the recognition serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of journalistic integrity. She noted that it also underscores the sacrifices made by journalists who are committed to speaking truth to power. The honour has reinforced the need to protect journalists in carrying out their constitutional duties.
AMDF Executive Director, Sekyen Dadik, stated that the recognition aligns with the foundation’s mission to support and advocate for press freedom. Dadik mentioned that the gesture inspires continued efforts to ensure the safety of journalists in Nigeria and beyond. The honour serves to motivate ongoing advocacy for the protection and support of journalists, particularly those facing challenges in their line of duty.
In response to the national honour, Martha Kaltho, the wife of the late journalist, expressed her profound appreciation to President Tinubu, remarking that her husband has finally been vindicated. Kaltho’s daughters, Ann and Leshi, also conveyed their gratitude to everyone who supported the family during difficult times.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that in 2019, AMDF initiated the Bagauda Kaltho Media Lecture Series to commemorate Mr. Kaltho, who disappeared between late 1996 and early 1997 due to his investigative journalism. Until his disappearance, Kaltho was recognized as a courageous and fearless journalist. The annual lecture, held on September 19th, his birthday, continues to shed light on the challenges faced by African journalists in their work.
