2027 Elections Will Reshape Nigeria’s Political Landscape: Youths

Abuja: The Inspire Youth Development Foundation (IYDF), a youth-focused non-governmental organisation, has declared that Nigeria’s 2027 general elections will bring about a new political landscape characterized by increased youth participation and accountable leadership. This announcement was made by Mr. Rabiu Lawal, the Convener of the group, during a roundtable event titled ‘The Youth Mandates 2027’.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event emphasized the importance of Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) registration and collection, as well as youth engagement and participation. Lawal highlighted the current disparity in Nigeria, where the youth, despite being the majority, lack significant influence. He expressed optimism that the upcoming elections would challenge existing political norms by fostering effective youth involvement.

Lawal stated that the elections would deviate from the usual practices among politicians, as the growing political awareness among young Nigerians and calls for inclusiveness ar
e expected to alter voter behavior and the electoral process significantly. The IYDF aims to establish an organized youth base of 100,000 members before the 2027 election cycle to influence elections, policies, and the nation’s future.

He emphasized that participating in the upcoming elections is not optional but a responsibility. He urged the youth to register, vote, and even run for office, stating that it’s time for them to step onto the field and face challenges directly. Lawal encouraged the youth to prepare for positive change by registering and collecting their PVCs and joining political parties to vote and be candidates.

Lawal pointed out that although over 70 percent of registered voters in the 2023 elections were youths, their impact in power has not been noticeable. He called on young political leaders to fulfill their mandates and remain purposeful, noting that representation means delivering results for the electorate.

Furthermore, Lawal advised the youth to engage in legitimate businesses to
empower themselves economically, stating that leadership extends beyond government to business, technology, and other sectors. A young job creator is as significant as a senator or minister, combining political and economic strength to become formidable.

Mr. Muslim Yuguda, an entrepreneur and young politician, encouraged young Nigerians to strive for impact in all areas of their lives. He noted that with youth constituting over 60 percent of the nation’s population, their collective voice is crucial in shaping leadership across all government levels.

Other participants at the meeting urged Nigerian youth to overcome religious, cultural, ethnic, and social stereotypes to achieve the desired change by 2027.
