‘Ghana Gaming and Lottery Awards’ launched to promote responsible gaming practices

Syndicated Entertainment Solutions Limited has launched the ‘Ghana Gaming and Lottery Awards’ to recognize and promote responsible compliant gaming practices.

The Award, which was launched in Accra, sought to encourage stakeholders in the gaming industry, would be held in September 2024.

The Award was launched in partnership with the Gaming Commission of Ghana and National Lottery Authority (NLA).

Mrs. Manuella Frempomaa Ansong, Director of Syndicated Entertainment Solution, said the award ceremony would help develop a framework to identify and monitor ways by which stakeholders could ensure responsible participation in line with applicable laws to meet best international practices.

She believed that recognizing excellence in the gaming and lottery industry was essential for fostering innovation, promoting responsible gaming practices and acknowledging outstanding contributions to the industry.

She said this initiative would ensure the credibility and integrity of gamers to enhance their significance and
impact.

‘Gaming and lottery, much like any other form of entertainment can bring excitement and joy, however, it is essential that it remains a fun and controlled activity, free from negative impacts that can arise through non-compliance and indifference to its effect on society,’ she added.

Speaking of the evaluation Committee of the Award, she said it would involve a Seven-Member Committee composed of representative from NLA and Gaming Commission, an auditor, lawyer and a member from the European Lotteries.

Mr. Samuel Awuku, Director General, NLA, commended Syndicated Entertainment Solution for introducing this exciting initiative and believed that the project would contribute to demystify the myths about gaming and lotteries, and highlighted the nuances that make up the game’s mechanics and dynamics.

He said the award signified to reward stakeholders, customers, retailers and operators, who work hard and tirelessly behind closed doors in the gaming sector.

‘While the Gaming and Lottery Awards seek to
honour persons practising responsible gaming and compliance, it is expected to expose the activities of perpetrators of illegal lottery operations, which are our biggest detractors,’ he added.

Mr. Peter Mireku, Chief Executive Officer of Gaming Commission of Ghana said, the Award was not merely about celebrating achievements but fostering a culture of responsibility and mindfulness within the gaming industry.

He said the Gaming Commission was poised to encourage stakeholders and to ensure responsible participation in gaming and lottery in order to maintaining the integrity and positive impact of our industry for sustainability.

He said the establishment of an annual Gaming and Lottery Awards was a significant step towards achieving the shared objectives of responsible and compliant gaming and lottery practices.

‘Let us remember that responsible gaming is a collective responsibility’, Mr Mreku said.

The Launch saw members from lottery institutions, stakeholders, experts in gaming companies, and private ga
ming firms.

Let’s be proud of our 30 years of democratic government – Bono Minister

Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Bono Regional Minister has inspired Ghanaians to be proud of the 30 years remarkable achievement of the nation’s democratic government.

Breaking away from the agitated periods of military rule and political instability that characterized the nation’s political landscape, the Regional Minister called on Ghanaians to embrace a future grounded in the principles of democracy, rule of law, and respect for fundamental human rights.

Madam Owusu-Banahene gave the inspiration when addressing a mock parliament organised by the Parliamentary Service in Sunyani, as part of activities to commemorate the 30 years of uninterrupted parliamentary democracy in the country.

It was on the theme ‘thirty years of parliamentary democracy under the fourth republic: the journey so far,’ and attended by MPs, Ministers of State, students, civil society actors and organisations, political parties, youth and women groups and traditional Authorities.

‘Today, we stand as a testament of the success of t
his endeavour, having conducted peaceful transitions of power and upheld the tenets of democracy through free and fair elections.

Our democratic institutions have grown stronger, and the voice of the people has been given a platform to be heard and respected,’ she stated.

Madam Owusu-Banahene indicated that the nation’s economy had seen substantial growth, with significant investments in infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

On the political arena, Ghana has become a beacon of stability in the West African sub-region if not Africa as a whole, and a model of democratic governance, and as well has remained a strong advocate for peace and development.

While we have made commendable progress, we must continue to take actionable steps to address issues of poverty, inequality and unemployment.

The Regional Minister said it was imperative for the nation to strive and ensure that the dividends of democracy were felt by all Ghanaians irrespective of their socio-economic status.

This requires collective effo
rt, a commitment to inclusive and sustainable development, she stated, saying the mock parliament demonstrated the essence and beauty of democracy, open dialogue, active participation, and exchange of ideas.

Madam Owusu-Banahene said everybody ought to be guided by the lessons of the past and the vision for a prosperous and democratic country, work together to build a better nation ‘where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive and where our democratic institutions are strong and resilient, and where the rule of laws prevails’.

Safisana calls for support to produce more green electricity

Mr Elikplim Asilevi, the General Manager of Safisana Ghana Limited, has asked the Government to support the Company in its mandate to produce more green electricity to reduce carbon emissions and promote healthy living among the populace.

He asked for more allocation on the national grid to produce more green electricity and some incentives to enable the Company to expand its production.

Mr Asilevi made the call when addressing journalists on a facility tour with Plan International Ghana, its partner on the ‘Stronger Together’ project.

Safisana Ghana Limited is a waste-to-resource company that turns waste into green electricity, fertiliser and biomass.

It collects faecal sludge from public toilets and organic waste food from markets, abattoirs and food processing companies and through a natural process of anaerobic digestion and fermentation, it transforms them into energy and fertiliser.

The renewable energy is subsequently used to produce power to feed the national electricity grid.

At the time that t
he country is facing power crisis, the General Manager said the Government needed to support Safisana to expand its modules for the good of citizens, industries and the economy at large.

Safisana at the moment, he said, was also producing electricity for some food processing industries with the individual company’s own generated waste.

‘This initiative and step is one in the right direction and we need the support and intervention of government to be able to expand these modules to support the economy,’ he added

Mr Daniel Agbenoto, Project Manager, Stronger Together Project, Plan International Ghana, said the lack of proper sanitation and waste treatment services in many low and middle income countries, including Ghana still caused over 842,000 deaths each year.

The huge health concerns, the growing global climate, energy and food crises necessitated the need to act.

Mr Agbenoto said the recycling of faecal and organic waste had a positive impact on the living environment of people in the target communit
ies by reducing air, land and water pollution.
