Plane carrying Malawi’s vice president reported missing


An aeroplane carrying Malawian Vice President, Saulos Chilima, has been missing since Monday morning, the office of the president said late Monday.

The Malawian armed forces aircraft with Chilima and nine other people on board, had taken off on a domestic flight in the morning, but then disappeared from radar.

NCCE committed to ensuring Ghanaians safeguard environment


Mr. Edem Afeeva, the Ayawaso West Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), says the commission is committed to ensuring that Ghanaians take environmental issues seriously to safeguard them.

Mr. Afeeva said conservation of natural resources would enhance the quality of life, increase biodiversity and protect habitats, as well as limit global warming.

The Ayawaso West NCCE planted a variety of plants at the Opportunity Industrialization Technical Institute (OITI), a second-cycle institute at East Legon, as part of supporting the government’s Green Ghana Initiative.

He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the NCCE was prepared to defend all the government’s programmes aimed at preserving and promoting the environmental needs of the country.

He mentioned that deforestation was destroying the forest and harming human life, hence the need to plant more trees to protect the environment.

Mr. Afeeva said the planet was in trouble due to global warming and other environmental issu
es; therefore, there was a need for everyone to come on board to solve this problem through tree planting across the country to help preserve the country’s vegetation for future generations.

He urged the OITI’s principal, teachers, NCCE Civic Education Club patrons and executives, and all stakeholders to nurture the trees planted to grow and contribute to a sustainable environment.

SEL, ECG Training Centre, organises seminar on innovative power solutions


The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Training Centre, in collaboration with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL), USA, has organised a one-day seminar on innovative solutions and ideas.

The seminar held at the ECG Training Centre in Tema was under the International Technical Exchange programme.

It was aimed at improving modern trends in power systems for the electricity distribution sector in the sub-region.

Participants at the seminar included officers of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Northen Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), ECG, the Volta River Authority (VRA), and the Bui Power Authority.

Experts and professionals at the seminar held discussions on transformer monitoring and control, micro-grid power plant controller applications, as well as powerful computing and software for distribution management.

Other areas covered included the use of travelling waves to locate faults on transmission lines.

Mr. Godfred Mensah, the Director of the ECG Training Centre, in an address, en
couraged participants to take advantage of the seminar and show enthusiasm towards the knowledge to be shared.

Mr. Sthit Sharma, the team leader of SEL, together with his colleagues, took participants through the various topics of discussion.

Participants, during an open session, shared their experiences on the various topics and provided input on the technologies that were discussed to enhance their work.

UDS observes World Environment Day by planting trees


The University for Development Studies (UDS) has planted over 1,000 shea and mahogany trees as part of activities to mark this year’s World Environment Day.

The tree planting exercise was carried out by students and staff of the Department of Environment and Sustainability Sciences under the Faculty of Natural Resources and Environment of the UDS.

Seedlings of the trees, nurtured by the Department, were planted in the Tolon Senior High School and selected communities in the Tolon District of the Northern Region.

As part of the World Environment Day commemoration, the students held a procession through the streets of UDS with placards, which had inscriptions of awareness creation on safeguarding the environment.

Some of the placards read ‘a green plant means a green future’, ‘be the change, embrace sustainability’, ‘our survival depends on the environment’ and ‘leave a legacy, plant a tree’, among others.

World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5, every year to inspire consciousness and action for the
protection of the environment.

This year’s commemoration was on the theme: ‘Our Land, Our Future’.

UDS had the commemoration in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), A ROCHA Ghana, Water Sanitation and Hygiene Club and the Ecotourism and Environmental Management Students Association.

Dr Dzigbordi Adzo Doke, Head of Department, Environment and Sustainability Sciences, UDS, speaking during the tree planting exercise, said the Department considered the day an opportunity to join the United Nations to draw attention to key environmental problems.

She said the exercise sought to draw attention to restoring, improving soil fertility and resilience, adding that it was opportune time to re-emphasise the importance of collaboration in protecting the environment.

She said, ‘Students are very key in this exercise because as we sensitise them, they grow with ideas of how to plant and nurture trees for survival.’

Dr Doke mentioned that the tree planting exercise focused on native trees given th
eir environmental and climate resilience characteristics, adding they were culturally accepted by the community.

Mr Karim Jato Saibu, Programme Officer at EPA, said planting trees occasionally could help to restore degraded lands underscoring the essence of the UDS’ initiative.

He noted that planting trees saved the vegetation and soil potency and could contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) one and two.

He said, ‘It is an important event and EPA being the sole government agency enshrined in the constitution to protect the environment, has decided to collaborate with the UDS to educate communities on the need to protect our environment.’

He urged members of the public to stop cutting down trees, bush burning and illegal logging, noting that those activities increased temperatures and affected vegetation.

Tolon-Naa Sulemana Abubakar, Chief of Tolon, commended the efforts of UDS in promoting activities that sustained the environment.

He said every citizen had a role to play in en
vironmental issues, adding initiatives geared at shielding natural resources should not be left to only institutions in the field of sustainability.

He called on the government to support the UDS agenda targeted at environmental sustainability to enable it extend projects to larger areas of the region.

Concern Youth of Keta demands justice for Jerry Kpesenu


The Concerned Youth of Keta in the Volta Region has appealed to the Inspector General of Police to launch an investigation into an alleged Police brutality leading to the death of their colleague, who died in Police custody.

This, they said, would enable the Ghanaian people to build greater trust and confidence in the Police within the Municipality.

Mr Fosman Doe, the Convenor of the group, in a press conference at Keta-Deviame, called for swift action against all officers involved in the alleged assault leading to the death of Mr Jerry Kpesenu, a landlord at Keta.

‘We the concerned and law-abiding youth, both home and abroad, gather here today with heavy hearts to address the barbaric, unprofessional, and inhumane act by some police officers at the Keta Police division.’

He said the untimely death of Mr Kpesenu popularly known as Maya in a police cell called for proper investigations to unravel the actual death of the deceased.

Mr Doe alleged that the deceased was brutally assaulted and manhandled in hi
s residence by the police.

‘A professional invitation to our brother to report himself at the Police station on an issue against him would have saved all pain and grief to us.’

The youth demanded that the IGP immediately interdict the officers in the alleged murder case to pave the way for thorough investigations into the circumstances leading to the death of the deceased.

They demanded that the IGP set up a five-member committee including families of the deceased and a youth representative Keta to aid in the investigation.

They also requested for an independent autopsy to be conducted to ascertain the cause of death.

The youth have given the IGP a seven-day ultimatum to address their grievances and take charge of all funeral arrangements.

The late Kpesenu was allegedly tortured and arrested by the Keta Police on Thursday, June 6, in his residence after a complaint was lodged against him for ceasing tools belonging to an electrician, who visited the premises to fix an air-condition in one of his tenant’
s rooms.

Informational gathered by the Ghana News Agency indicated that the tenant failed to inform the deceased about plans to install an air-condition, whilst a complaint was later lodged leading to his arrest.

The deceased was later pronounced dead in Police custody after an arrest was affected.

However, the Police at Keta are yet to comment on the matter.

The deceased’s body has since been deposited at the Keta Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy.

GNA’s information shows that the current incident brings to four, Police brutality and high-handedness on suspects in their custody in the last 12 months, with similar cases in Akatsi, Ho, and Hohoe, not receiving justice.

NPP Assistant Secretary beaten by unknown assailants in Oti Region


Mr Shaibu Nyande Konde, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Krachi Nchumuru District capital Chinderi, is currently nursing injuries after an attack on him by some unknown assailants.

The victim, the Constituency Assistant Secretary of the NPP, was returning from Zongo-Macheri, a farming community near the district capital.

The thugs succeeded in blocking the main road at Kakraka and subjected Mr Konde to profound beatings.

The vehicle of the victim was also destroyed in the assault, and he was subsequently referred to a clinic in Chinderi under Police escort and currently receiving treatment.

Mr Isaac Njona Fanyan, the Constituency Communication Officer, confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency (GNA).

He told GNA that leadership of the NPP had filed a complaint at the Krachi Nchumuru District Police station to apprehend the thugs for assaulting the victim at Kakraka.

Mr James Mamudu, the Parliamentary candidate of the NPP, explained that his team went to Banda and bussed voters to t
he district head office of Electoral Commission (EC), for vote transfer, when they were stopped and beaten.

He said the NDC MP allegedly raised alarm about the NPP parliamentary candidate over the alleged bussing of voters from Kpandai constituency in the Northern region, specifically Chakori, Kumundi, Bakanba, Wiae, Kabonwele, Lonto and Kojo-Boni, leading to the assault.

Mr Kuyon, the NDC MP, said a vehicle organised by the ruling NPP PC was carrying voters from these communities to Chinderi and the only option for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was to block the road and return them to the Northern Region.
