Ghana Federation of Labour declares 2024 as Labour Action Year

The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has declared 2024 an action year for labour, urging the unions to demand their fair share of pay and better conditions of service.

‘The various labour unions must not sit aloof again; we must rise up and fight for our fair share of the national cake,’ it said.

Mr Abraham Koomson, the GFL Secretary-General, who made the declaration, called on the leadership of labour unions to solidify their front to defend the interests of Ghanaian workers by fighting for higher salaries, fair working hours, and safer working conditions.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Tema on Labour expectations for 2024, he said: ‘This year, if labour unions fail to fight for the interests of workers, we risk popular revolt against the leaderships; we cannot stand the anger of hungry workers.’

‘I am calling on fellow labour union leaders to work together. We must confront anyone, including the Government and the management of establishments, whose actions or inactions are not in the in
terest of the worker’.

Mr Koomson said 2023 witnessed some Labour unrests, which demonstrated workers’ frustration over some government policies inimical to labour welfare.

He charged public sector managers to set strategic and measurable targets for workers and ensure their achievable within defined periods.

He noted that workers were often accused of under-performance when, in some instances, basic tools to work with were unavailable.

Mr Koomson identified poor supervision at the various Ministries, Departments and Agencies as major contributors to the low performance of workers sometimes witnessed.

‘We must rather hold senior management and supervisors responsible for the failure of workers to achieve targets,’ he said.

He suggested the reintroduction of the clock-in-and-out system to ensure punctuality, adding: ‘If you don’t clock in, the days or hours lost would be deducted at the end of the month from your salary.’

‘I have worked in the industry before; you can’t go loitering around; we have targ
ets. We have leaders, foremen, and workers, so if the worker is found loitering, then the manager should be concerned and ask what is happening.’

‘Some workers sometimes want to be idle, so if, as management or supervisor, you fail to assign that person, don’t expect any output.’

‘Public sector managers must sometimes study and apply the strict compliance practice systems as private companies do; if you fail to achieve targets consistently, you face the music.’

Mr. Koomson reiterated the discrimination in the labour market and said the unfair treatment must end.

He questioned the reason for some workers retiring on their full salary with all other entitlements while others went home with virtually nothing.

‘These are errors and unfair treatment on the labour front, which we must all work together to correct this year.’

‘We all work for the same state; either we all retire on our full salaries with other benefits or we all go home without it. There should be no room for animal farm policies.’

Hajia Safuratu Mohammed Andani, National President FOMWAG, highlighted in an interview with the Ghana News Agency some of the plans of the new executives.

She said the ne
w executives intended to bring other Muslim women’s organisations under the umbrella of FOMWAG to facilitate the advocacy effort for Muslim women in Ghana.

She, however, raised concern about the challenges confronting the Federation, notably the poor commitment of the members, which translated into poor revenue generation due to low dues collection.

This challenge, she noted, further worsened the funding gap to undertake projects for the advancement of the Federation and the Muslim community in Ghana.

Hajia Andani also reinforced the commitment of the new executives to advance the projects initiated by the previous executives, including the school project at Achiaman.

‘Our hope is that we will be able to secure funding to complete the project during our tenure.’

During this time, we want to organise more of these fund-raising events to complete the project. We also want to engage organisations such as corporate bodies and diplomatic missions, particularly in Muslim countries, for sponsorship of the proje
ct,’ she said.

Dr. Rabiatu Koney, a member of the Board of Trustees, FOMWAG congratulated the new executives for their appointment and encouraged them to look into alternative ways to finish the school project at Achiaman.

Banker gets bail for dishonestly appropriating customer’s cash

The Tarkwa circuit court has granted a 30-year-old banker, Edmond Nashiru, bail in the sum of GH?50,000 with one surety for dishonestly appropriating cash belonging to a customer of the bank.

He pleaded not guilty.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Joseph Lartey, prayed the court presided over by Mrs Hathia Ama Manu for extension on the case to enable them to file their disclosure. The court agreed and gave the police two weeks to do the needful.

The case has been adjourned to Tuesday, January 23, 2024.

Chief Inspector Lartey earlier said the complainant Felicility Acquah, was a rotational nurse resident at New Atuabo in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.

Felicity holds a savings account at Access Bank, Tarkwa branch, while Edmond was a front desk officer.

He said on November 6, 2023, the Tarkwa Police, received a complaint from Felicity that she received a series of mobile alerts on his phone on the same day indicating that her account had been debited with a total amount of GH?9,781.00 without her con
sent.

The prosecutor said Felicity went to Edmond at the banking hall for clarification, but he informed her that fraudsters had stolen her money and she left.

As part of a police investigation into the complaint, on November 16, 2023, they obtained a court order and served management of the bank to provide detailed information on the transaction, which led to the cash stolen from Felicity’s account, Chief Inspector Lartey said.

The prosecution said the audit department of the bank investigated the theft presented their report to the police and indicated that Edmond was the one behind the theft.

The report further revealed that Edmond used his cell phone to transfer the said money from Felicity’s account to two different MTN numbers.

Edmond was arrested and during the investigation revealed to the police that he assisted Felicity in installing a banking application on her mobile phone and in the process obtained her log-in credentials.

The prosecutor said to cover up the crime, Edmond tasked his brother
who is currently at large to get him two Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards to purposely deposit the stolen money on it.

Chief Inspector Lartey said after Edmond and his brother had successfully completed the transaction, they discarded the two SIM cards to ensure they were not apprehended

Create job opportunities to address teacher attrition – Prof Quartey

Professor Peter Quartey, Director, Institute for Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) has asked the government to create more job opportunities for teachers to reduce the attrition rate.

He said most teachers who sought greener pastures did so because of unemployment, low wages, and poor working conditions, calling on authorities to address the issues and ensure improvement in learning outcomes.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, the Professor said that though the country could not stop migration, there was a need to manage the situation.

‘If the country has excess teachers, then it can export, but in a coordinated manner to maximise the benefits for the country,’ he said.

Prof Quartey said the government could institute measures and set a quota for teachers to migrate and pay remittances to the country as part of an agreement to defray the training cost.

He said a country like the Philippines had done that not only in the teaching space but the health sector and had recei
ved foreign inflows.

Dr Christian Addai-Poku, the Registrar, National Teaching Council, raised concerns about the teacher attrition rate in 2023 and called for a concerted action to address the situation.

He said over 16,000 Ghanaian teachers had applied for positions with the Department of Education in the United Kingdom (UK) in 2023.

The Registrar said by June 13, 2023, approximately 10,000 of those applicants holding Ghana Teacher Licences were granted certification to work in the UK without requiring further assessment by the UK government.
