Miss Nicaragua wins 2023 Miss Universe pageant

Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua was crowned the 2023 Miss Universe at the culmination of the annual beauty pageant, which took place on Saturday night in El Salvador’s capital, San Salvador.

Anntonia Porsild of Thailand placed as first runner-up.

The winners of 84 countries’ national pageants had competed at this year’s Miss Universe, judged by a panel including model Halima Aden, ‘Queer Eye’ star Carson Kressley, TikTok influencer Avani Gregg and two former Miss Universe winners, Janelle Commissiong of Trinidad and Tobago (Miss Universe 1977) and Iris Mittenaere of France (Miss Universe 2016).

Twenty semi-finalists were announced at the beginning of Saturday night’s proceedings following the results of the preliminary competition (and a global fan vote).

After the swimsuit round, the field was narrowed to 10 – seeing the elimination of the first ‘curvy’ contestant to make the pageant’s semi finals, Miss Nepal, as well as the first contestant to choose a burkini as their swimsuit, Miss Pakistan.

The ev
ening gown round cut the number of contestants in half again.

Two rounds of hot topic Q and As then left just three women in contention: Palacios, Porsild and second runner-up Moraya Wilson of Australia.

Asked in the final round who she would choose to spend a day in the life of, Palacios chose the 18th-century British philosopher and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, who she said broke boundaries and ‘gave an opportunity to many women.’

‘There are no limitations for women today,’ she added, via a translator.

Nick Ball sinks Isaac Dogboe’s world title hopes with decision win

Ghanaian boxer Isaac ‘Royal Storm’ Dogboe (25-4, 15KOs) suffered a unanimous decision loss against undefeated British boxer Nick Ball in Saturday’s World Boxing Council (WBC) featherweight world title eliminator.

It was Dogboe’s fourth career loss, as the British boxing prodigy dominated the bout at the OA Arena in Manchester, United Kingdom.

After the highly entertaining bout, all three judges scored the fight 119-108, 116-111, and 118-109, all in favour of Nick Ball, who is guaranteed a world title shot in the coming months.

Dogboe, who is a former WBO super bantamweight champion, started the bout very well with some good jabs, but Ball’s compact style, great defence, and effectively using the jabs kept Dogboe at bay.

In the fourth round, Ball scored a knockdown over Dogboe in what seemed like a push.

Overall, Dogboe had his chance to dictate the game, but Ball was much more powerful than the Ghanaian boxer and held on to secure the win to stay undefeated in 19 bouts.

It was Dogboe’s second defeat i
n 2023 after he unfortunately lost to Cuban southpaw Robeisy Ramirez in April for the vacant WBO featherweight title.

2026 FIFA WCQ: ‘This is my most disappointing moment in football’ – Madagascar coach livid after loss to Ghana

Madagascar coach Romuald Rakotondrabe is disappointed after his side lost 1-0 to Ghana in Group I’s first game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Inaki Williams grabbed his first and only goal for Ghana in the 90+6 minutes to give the Black Stars the needed win over the Bareas.

The Athletic Bilbao forward Williams connected a fantastic cross from Gideon Mensah to deliver a powerful header to deny hard-nut to break Madagascar a vital away point.

After the game, coach Rakontondrabe praised his charges for a good show, however expressed disappointment in their loss of concentration in the dying minutes of the game.

‘The boys have done so well but I’m so disappointed. This is one of my most disappointing moments in football where you concede a goal 25 seconds into regulation time. And in such big games, some of these mistakes cannot be made.

‘The boys started very well, in the first 45 minutes where we had some chances but we couldn’t bury it. In the second half, our goalkeeper saved us and we were hopi
ng to get a point but that last-minute goal spoilt it. I can’t even find the right words to express it,’ said the Bareas coach.

Ghana is in second place in the group behind Comoros who defeated Central Africa Republic 4-2.

Coach Chris Hughton would regroup his players as they play guest to Comoros on Tuesday, November 21.

Bofoakwa and Nsoatreman share spoils in a regional derby

The highly anticipated regional derby between Bofoakwa Tano and Nsoatreman FC ended in a goalless draw at the Sunyani Coronation Park during the 11th matchday fixture of the ongoing betPawa Ghana Premier League 2023/24.

The first half of the game started off slowly but it was Bofoakwa’s Elijah Addae who failed to convert a glorious opportunity in the 25th minute, placing the ball directly into the hands of Daniel Afadzwu, the Nsoatreman goalkeeper.

The second half, on the other hand, began with higher intensity as both teams started to string their passes together in search of a goal.

In the 68th minute, Bofoakwa Tano’s Clement Ansah attempted a long-range volley but failed to find the equalizer his team needed.

Despite the intense efforts from both sides, neither team could find the much-needed goal in the second half.

The introduction of Bofoakwa’s captain and talisman, Saaka Dauda, brought some transformation to his side, but this did not translate into goals for his team.

The match concluded with B
ofoakwa Tano fans expressing their frustration over some decisions made by the centre referee, Robert Musey with a fan who found himself on the picch after the man hit the referee, drawing the attention of the security personnel who escorted him to the dressing room.

Tension then began to escalate among supporters of Bofoakwa Tano at the park, unfortunately, Nsoatreman’s coach, Maxwell Konadu, was not spared from the chaos as some fans, unable to contain their frustration, hit and threw objects at him.

Even the Sunyani East Ambulance with registration number GV 31-20, which was on duty at the park, was not exempted from the troubles as some attacked and threw stones at it causing damage to the screen, when it was transferring Nsoatreman’s coach for medical services.

Leslie Tamakloe is best bet for NDC’s Vice Presidential Candidate – Movement

A group within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is proposing an entrepreneur with interests in oil and gas, Mr Leslie Mensah Tamakloe, as the best person to be the running mate of Mr John Dramani Mahama for the 2024 general election.

The group, known as ‘The Leslie Mensah Tamakloe for Vice President Movement,’ said the accomplished entrepreneur and consultant in ICT, Energy and Infrastructural Development, with over 30 years working experience in related endeavours, was the best bet to ensure victory for the NDC.

Speaking to Ghana News Agency, Mr Silas Aidam, Convener of the group in the Volta/Oti Regions, said a John Mahama-Leslie Tamakloe joint ticket would attract significant bloc votes from the youth due to the prospect of leveraging ICT infrastructure and digital technology to create jobs for them.

It would also give renewed hope to indigenes of the Volta Region, home of Mr Tamakloe and stronghold of the NDC, of their valuable stake in the party, he said.

‘The 2024 Presidential election is a c
rucial one for the party and we need a running mate who promises electoral advantages and that is who we have in Leslie Tamakloe,’ Mr Aidam said.

‘Apart from what he’s bringing in terms of his professional career and his personality, his selection means a lot for the Volta Region and its associate regions including Oti.’

‘Being an Anlo Royal from the home region of our party Founder, the late Jerry John Rawlings, we’re of the view that Volta/Oti has been voting massively for the NDC for a long time now and it is time to have one of our own as Vice President….’

‘…Because again, most of our stalwarts have died and those alive are ageing, a situation that can threaten the support base of the region.’

Mr Aidam said concerned party members and grassroots had also seen the need for the NDC Flagbearer to choose his running mate from the Volta Region as anything short of that would give room to the ruling New Patriotic Party to infiltrate the region.

‘Just one man stands tall in the region at the moment. He has
sterling qualities and qualifications in all respects, experience, discipline and circumspection. When the floods came, he quickly responded by providing relief items to our brothers and sisters hardest-hit in the Tongu area.’

‘He’s continuous support to the party across board are ample evidence of his visibility towards the NDC in the two regions.’

He had been a patron to the Cadres for a long time and his records in helping the NDC collate results over the years – 2008, 2012 and 2020 are there for all to see.

‘That is the man, Leslie Tamekloe,’ Mr Aidam said.

Journalists must remain vanguards for peace and development in 2024

Mr Kofi Yeboah, the General Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has urged journalists and media practitioners to remain vanguards for peace and development as the country navigates the tightrope towards the 2024 Election.

He said journalists must remain the bastion for information, education and entertainment as mandated by the Constitution.

He said these values could stimulate the needed development, social cohesion and national integration when well-positioned and journalists educated to play their gate-keeping roles adequately.

Mr Yeboah made these statements when he represented Mr Albert Dwumfuor, GJA President, during the GJA-US Embassy Ghana Elections 2024 project dubbed ‘Journalists for Peaceful Discourse,’ Zone 1 Training and Mini project in Ho.

The Training was organised by the GJA and sponsored by the US Embassy on the theme: ‘Promoting Peaceful Journalistic Media Platforms Ahead of Elections 2024.’

It was attended by select Journalists, show hosts and hostesses, representati
ves of political parties and the Electoral Commission.

Mr Yeboah said an uninformed Journalist could not give what he or she does not have, saying, ‘To be informed by an uninformed person is disinformation.’

He said education was key and important for the gatekeepers and agenda-setters, and journalists needed to uphold ethical standards of journalism as contained in Article Two of the GJA guidelines.

He said journalism thrived on integrity, cautioning Journalists to hasten, but slowly, as speed could injure the accuracy, objectivity and credibility of news stories and insisted that speed should be balanced with accuracy through cross-checking facts.

The General Secretary said the 2024 was more crucial than all previous elections and the make or break would rely on the professionalism or otherwise of Journalists, especially Television and radio hosts and hostesses, as they held seamless opportunities to make the upcoming elections flawless.

He acknowledged that politics was about ideas and development and
could not be an avenue for violence and disunity.

Mr Yeboah said the platform provided by the media to politicians to air their ideas must not degenerate into instability and displacement of citizens, saying central to this achievement would be the professionalism of journalists.

He urged Journalists to advocate for peace, distancing themselves from war and warmongering, while providing all stakeholders with equal opportunities on their platforms.

He paid glowing tribute to the US Embassy for their continuous support, resulting in the training of journalists since 2012.

Ms Rebecca Ekpe, the Project Lead and Public Affairs Officer of GJA, said there was a need for Journalists to champion issue-based journalism as the country reached the crossroads to deliver another free, fair and peaceful general election in 2024.

She said GJA’s study had shown that radio topped mediums for inciting citizens due to its seamless nature and reach and again remained the most listened-to medium for information, education and
entertainment.

She indicated that the responsibility of journalists and media practitioners must rise above reproach and discourage misguided commentaries on their shows.

Ms Ekpe said the country had been zoned into five, for others to benefit from similar training opportunities across the country, with the zones undertaking mini projects that would champion and guarantee peaceful elections.

Mr Fred Duodu, the Secretary of the Volta and Oti Chapter on fact-checking tools for peaceful elections, urged journalists to be guided by what constituted facts and opinions so they could guide their panellists to navigate such lines while on their shows.

He said usually, opinions, which were unscientific and personal feelings were represented as facts, naked truth or reality and that was problematic.

Mr Nuhu Mahama, the Oti Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, gave a brief background of the Commission established by Act 451 of 1993 and mandated as the official body responsible for all public elections, wi
th its independence guaranteed by the 1992 Constitution.

He said the Commission, since its establishment, organised eight successful general elections and was currently preparing for the Elections 2024.

Mr Emmanuel Agbaxode, the Chairman of Volta and Oti GJA Chapter reminded journalists of their unbridled responsibility as the ‘fourth estate of the realm’ to always rekindle all their exploits in the media industry, especially going into the upcoming elections.

Present at the event were the Volta Regional Secretary, National Democratic Congress, Mr James Gunu, and Mr Stephen Akpablie, the Deputy Secretary of Ho West, New Patriotic Party.

A panel presentation was showcased to demonstrate the technicalities of a typical show hosting with the takeaways of the discussions, being empanelling, topics for shows, time allotment, the credibility of the host and biases.
