Technology crucial to sanitising mining sector – Alake

Dr Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, has emphasised the significance of technology in sanitising and repositioning the mining sector for greater productivity to attain its full potential.

A statement by Segun Tomori, Special Assistant on Media to the minister, said that Alake made this known on Monday in Abuja when he hosted Mr Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation.

“Technology will reposition the sector to enable it contribute substantially to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration,” the statement quoted Alake as saying.

It further quoted Alake as saying that the solid minerals sector relies on a huge dose of technology to sanitise areas such as scientific geo-data generation, security challenges and other ancillary matters around the mining value chain.

“For instance, the security architecture that we are rejigging, we are going to inject a large measure of technology into it.

“Where else do we go outside the science, innovation and technology ministry to assist us in this regard?

“That’s why my brother Minister has come in and we are consolidating, discussing and moving the issue forward to ensure that at the end of the day, there is synergy in all our operations.

“That was part of the essence of the ministerial retreat we had last week.

“The visit is in furtherance of our collaborative efforts to ensure that the solid minerals ministry is a beneficiary of all the innovations that will be pushed out,” the minister added.

In his remarks, Nnaji affirmed the imperative of partnership to assist the solid minerals ministry to take advantage of innovations that would keep the minister abreast of activities within the mining sector.

“We have a lot of innovations in Science and Technology. We have a satellite approach to what they do in solid minerals ministry such that even on the minister’s desk here, he can see all the licenses they have issued and be able to monitor.

“It means that whenever there is an intrusion into a mining area or someone is mining illegally, he will notice.

“All of these, and even more, he will be will be able to decipher from his desk. That is part of the discussion we have held. We want to actually be in consonance with the Renewed Hope agenda,” Nnaji asserted.

International NGO to establish platform to track digital rights violation

Avocats Sans Frontieres (ASF) France, on Monday, said it would develop a platform, through its e-rights project, where incidences of digital rights violation can be reported and tracked in order to have verifiable statistics in Nigeria.

Angela Uzoma-Iwuchukwu, the Country Director, ASF France, also known as Lawyers Without Borders, France, stated this at the E-Rights Training for Judges and Lawyers on Digital Rights in Abuja.

‘In terms of statistics of cases of digital rights violation, the e-rights project is developing a platform called, ‘The Closing Civic Spaces Platform,’ where incidences of digital rights violation can be reported by citizens, activists, journalists, etc.

“This will create a platform for us to track and be able to have a verifiable statistics of digital rights violations in Nigeria,” she said.

Uzoma-Iwuchukwu said the organisation would support the initiative by being proactive in responding with legal assistance for victims of digital rights violations in the country.

“The project is also going to be engaging in strategic litigations on digital rights issues as one of the strategies that we are employing to promote digital rights in the country,” she said.

The country director, who said that 30 judges and lawyer would be trained in the first phase, also said that judges and lawyers in Kano State, Lagos State and Imo would also be trained as four key states for the pilot project.

She said the capacity session was to contribute to the respective digital rights in Nigeria, particularly by promoting digital rights in various aspects looking at respect for the rights of Nigerians on digital platforms, freedom of expression, privacy rights, data protection of Nigerians on digital platforms, etc.

“We believe that human rights that are traditionally protected offline should also be protected and respected online so that’s the essence of the work we are doing on e-rights project,” she said.

The Chief Judge of FCT, Justice Hussein Baba-Yusuf, represented by Justice Ngozika Ndukwe-Nwabulu, said technology had not only ushered in unprecedented opportunities but also exposed the world to new risks and attacks.

He said the training was critical given the increasing amount of personal data shared online and the potential for privacy violations.

“The training will also provide an insight into laws and regulations related to digital technologies, including data protection, intellectual property, cybercrime, and internet governance.

“Understanding these laws can help individuals and organisations avoid legal issues and ensure compliance.

“Digital rights training often includes cybersecurity awareness, which is crucial in protecting oneself and organisations from cyber threats, data breaches, and online harassment,” Baba-Yusuf said.

The President of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, called on the judges and lawyers to rise to the challenge and stand as pillars of justice, defending the digital rights of all Nigerians.

Maikyau, represented by Chairman, NBA Abuja Branch,, Afam Okeke, also said that the training would provide the judges and lawyers with a deeper knowledge of digital rights, legislation which would focus on relevant national, regional and international digital rights legislation and standards.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some.of the judges at the training include Justices Nkeonye Maha and Donatus Okorowo of Federal High Court, Abuja; Justice Mimi Katsina-Alu of FCT High Court, among others.

Education: Camp coordinator urges support for IDPs

Mr Solomon Folorunsho, Camp Coordinator, Home for the Needy Foundation, Uhorgua, Edo has called for support for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the camp.

Folorunsho stated this in an interview with the News agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.

He made the appeal following the recent achievements by two members of the camp who bagged five awards on graduation from the Edo University, Uzaire.

Ishaku Amos, who graduated with a first class honours degree in Chemical Engineering bagged the award for the best graduating student in 2023.

He also bagged the Mike Ozekhome award for the overall best graduating student, as well as that of the Best in the Department of Chemical Engineering.

His other awards included the best student in Entrepreneurship and Best in the Faculty of Engineering.

Saminu Wakili who graduated with a Second class, Upper Division in Law also bagged the award for the best graduating student in 2023 in the Faculty of Law.

He also won the Mike Ozekhome prize for the best graduating student in the faculty of Law, as well as the Best student, Department of Public and International Law.

Wakili also won the award for the best graduating male student in the Faculty of Law, as well as the Olayiwola Afolabi prize for best graduating student in the Department of Private and Business Law.

Folorunsho said that the duo had proven that no matter the situation people find themselves, with determination, focus, hard work and commitment, they can achieve their goals.

He said that the journey to see the IDPs through school to achieve their desires had not been easy amidst other daunting challenges in the camp.

The coordinator said that the management of the camp and indeed the foundation was more than resolute to keep supporting them.

“I am a proud father today, because some of my children (the IDPs), have really done me and the entire management of the camp proud.

“We have some of our IDPs who graduated from the Edo University, Uzaire on Saturday, and among them 10 graduated exceptionally.

“Among the 10, one graduated with First Class Honours Degree in Chemical Engineering, while nine others graduated with Second Class Upper Division Honours Degree.

“Though the journey for them hasn’t been easy, as sometimes paying their school fees and their returning to school is delayed because of lack of fund.

“Today they have done us so proud, and I’m optimistic that others in other institution will also bring us similar honour.”

The coordinator appealed to Nigerians to help the camp to support the IDPs, as the management was facing difficult challenges currently.

He said the challenges include feeding, funding of their education and shortage of drugs in the health facility among others.

Speaking with NAN, Amos said that the journey through school was tough, but thanked God for using the management of the camp to help him achieve his dream.

He said that insecurity almost ended his dream of becoming an engineer after he was forced to leave his state, Borno, to attend the camp.

“But today, I thank God and the entire management of the camp for helping me achieve my dream.

“This was even in spite of me writing JAMB more than twice before I could secure an admission,”

Presidency urges Obi to rise above personal ambition, uphold national interest

Mr Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, on Monday urged the Labour Party (LP) Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to “prove his belief in Nigeria.”

In a statement titled: “Peter Obi should find better vocation instead of casting aspersions on the Judiciary”, Onanuga also admonished Obi to find another worthwhile vocation to engage his time henceforth.

“If Mr Peter Obi truly believes in Nigeria, the time to prove it is now when all men and women of goodwill are rallying support for President Bola Tinubu in his determination to lead a new era of prosperity, inclusive governance and economic growth.

“Our admonition to Obi is to find another worthwhile vocation to engage his time henceforth, having been rejected by majority of Nigerians who didn’t consider him qualified to lead our country.

“Nigerians rejected Peter Obi and his demagoguery at the poll because he posed present and future danger to the peace, progress and stability of our country,” Onanuga said.

The presidential aide said Obi’s antecedents as Governor of Anambra for eight years didn’t inspire any confidence as someone capable of running a country like Nigeria.

According to him, no tangible records of achievement in the state he governed recommended him for the Presidency of Nigeria.

“The LP presidential candidate in the last election, Mr Peter Obi, addressed a press conference, just like Atiku Abubakar, where he cast aspersions on the Supreme Court.

“He also attacked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for not declaring him the winner of the February 25, 2023 election.

“We are at a loss as to how the copy-cat Obi and his faction of Labour Party convinced themselves they won an election in which they came a distant third.”

He expressed surprise at the grand delusion that made Obi believe he could have won a national election where he ran the most hateful, divisive and polarising campaign that pitted Christians against Muslims.

“His campaign also tried to pit ethnic groups against each other in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society like Nigeria. Such grand delusion should be a matter for deeper examination.”

“At the press conference where he tried, in vain, to gaslight Nigerians with false claims and innuendos, Mr Obi contradicted himself.

“Here was a beneficiary of judicial pronouncements in the past now castigating the same court because its judgment did not go his way.”

Onanuga said Obi claimed the Supreme Court Justices didn’t consider public opinion in delivering what has been applauded as a most profound judgment in an election appeal.

“Incidentally, the LP candidate presented the most watery and unreasonable petition before any court in the history of electoral cases in Nigeria.

“He made false allegations of rigging and other electoral malpractices yet could not produce any evidence to back up his claims at both the court of first instance and at the apex court.

“In a failed effort to mobilise and retain the support of his supporters, Obi gave them a forlorn hope that he won the election and would prove it before the courts.

“Throughout the trial, his lawyers didn’t present any alternative results different from the results INEC uploaded on the IReV portal and the ones signed by all party agents from the 176,000 polling units.

“We wonder how the LP candidate expected the courts to do justice on the basis of rumours, lies and false narratives by sponsored partisans and fanatical members of his ‘Obidient Movement’

“We expected the LP candidate to know that the supreme court or any other court does not give judgment based on public opinion and mob sentiments.”

The presidential aide noted that judicial pronouncements are based on evidence, precedents and the rule of law.

“Having admitted that the supreme court ruling brought an end to litigation and any challenge to Tinubu as the validly elected leader of Nigeria, Obi should have congratulated Tinubu for his victory and pledged his support, in the spirit of statesmanship.

“But instead, he brought up extraneous matters that he thought the apex court should have considered to declare him the winner.

“In our view, the drowning Obi, just like Atiku, was merely attempting to hold on to a straw in raking up new allegations, which exist only in his imagination and that of his hordes of supporters. ”

Onanuga, therefore, enjoined Obi and his party to play the role of the opposition and start preparing for another shot at the presidency in 2027.

“We hope by then he would campaign on issues and not whip up religious and ethnic sentiments as he did in the last campaign,”
