Angola, Serbia sign sports agreement

A cooperation agreement on the field of sports was signed Monday in Belgrade between Angola and Serbia, a source from the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MINJUD) has said.

The partnerships cover staff training, sharing of experiences, internships for national teams and training for coach.

On Angola’s side, the incumbent minister Palmira Barbosa, who has been in Belgrade for a three-day working visit, signed the agreement.

The minister is being accompanied by the presidents of the Angolan Football Federation (FAF) Artur de Almeida e Silva, handball (FAAND) José do Amaral “Maninho”, as well as senior staff from the Ministry.

On the 9th of this month, the FAAND president received, at the federation’s headquarters in Luanda, the ambassador of Serbia to Angola, Milos Perisic, with whom he discussed, among several issues, cooperation in this social aspect.

As part of her visiting programme, the minister Palmira Barbosa highlighted on Sunday the qualities of the founder of the Angolan Nation, António Agostinho Neto, while delivering her speech ahead of September 17th, National Hero’s Day.

At an event, organised by the Angolan embassy in Serbia, the minister spoke of the human and patriotic dimension of a man who guided Angola to independence, proclaimed on November 11, 1975

Ambassador Agostinho Van-Dúnem accredited in Belize

Angolan diplomat Agostinho Van-Dúnem was accredited Sunday in Belmopan, Belize’s capital, as Angola’s new non-resident ambassador to this Central American country.

After handing over the letters of credentials to the governor-general Froyla Tzalam, Agostinho Van-Dúnem discussed with the Belize official issues relating to bilateral ties as well as the current international hot topics.

Located on the northeast coast of Central America, Belize achieved its independence on September 21, 1981. But remains historically linked to the United Kingdom as a full member of the Commonwealth.

The government of Belize is based on the parliamentary system with an assembly with two chambers made up of elected MPs and senators appointed based on representation.

Therefore, the Prime Minister is the head of the government and the governor-general is the head of state who represents the British monarch.

It is the only country in the region that speaks English, despite its culture being deeply rooted influenced by the region-based Spanish speaking countries.

The economy is mainly based on the incorporation of offshore companies, agriculture, agrarian-based industry and merchandising, tourism (especially areas linked to diving) and construction.

Sugar is the most important agricultural product and is responsible for almost half of exports, while the banana industry is the country’s largest employer

GPL Wk 1: Torrid start for Hearts in Tamale, Heart of Lions hold Kotoko

The first weekend of the 2023/ 24 Ghana Premier League witnessed lots of interesting results across various league centres as teams looked to secure the first points of the season.

Accra Hearts of Oak did not get the desired start as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Real Tamale United at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium on Friday.

Afriyie Owusu’s 93rd-minute header sealed a thrilling victory for RTU as Hearts of Oak recorded their third successive loss against the Northern giants, who look rejuvenated with their new additions.

Despite their loss, some new players from Hearts of Oak, including Kashala, Evans Adomako, and Kofi Agbesimah, were impressive on their debuts and would be eager to get their first win when they face Nsoatreman FC on matchday two.

Kumasi Asante Kotoko on the other hand, secured their first point of the season as they were held to a goalless draw by Kpando Heart of Lions at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

The Lions proved a difficult side to beat for the Porcupine Warriors, who struggled to create any clear-cut chances as the spoils were shared.

The game was also marred by controversy, especially after Heart of Lions scored a ‘perfect’ goal but was adjudged an offside by the assistant referee.

Elsewhere in the league, Legon Cities secured a 2-1 victory against Karela United at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

The ‘Royals’ who were dealt a huge blow with the demise of their goalkeeper last week, had to come back from a goal down to beat Karela United in the season’s opener.

Two second-half goals by Frank Antwi ensured the comeback was complete after Kharim Abdul Ayeh opened the scoring for Karela United in the first half.

Stephen Amankona’s brace for Berekum Chelsea ensured they beat Bibiani Gold Stars at the Golden City Park in Sunyani, while Samartex also edged Aduana Stars 1-0 in Samreboi.

Great Olympics were held by Bofoakwa Tano at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, while Nsoatreman beat Bechem United 2-0 in Nsoatre.

Week one continues during the midweek as reigning GPL champions Medeama face Accra Lions while FA Cup winners Dreams face debutants Nations FC in Dawu.

Some results of week one:

RTU 1-0 Hearts of Oak

Asante Kotoko 0-0 Heart of Lions

Berekum Chelsea 2-0 Bibiani Gold Stars FC

FC Samartex 1996 1-0 Aduana Stars

Legon Cities 2-1 Karela United

Nsoatreman FC 2-0 Bechem United

Great Olympics 0-0 Bofoakwa Tano FC

Israel files complaint against German Ambassador Seibert

Israel, lodged an official complaint in Berlin on Sunday, against the German ambassador to Israel, according to an Israeli representative.

The complaint stemmed from German ambassador, Steffen Seibert, attending a historic meeting of the Supreme Court in Jerusalem last Tuesday, as a spectator, the representative confirmed. This is seen as interference in Israel’s internal affairs.

The complaint by Israeli Foreign Minister, Eli Cohen, had been conveyed through the Israeli ambassador in Berlin, Ron Prosor. A reporter from the Israeli TV station Channel 13 had reported on the incident on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

Seibert posted on X last Tuesday that the Israeli Supreme Court was ‘the place to be this morning.’

Israel’s Supreme Court had dealt with a highly controversial judicial shake-up by the right-wing religious government, in a historic court hearing on Tuesday. For the first time in the country’s history, all 15 judges came together to deliberate on eight petitions against an amendment to the Basic Law that had been passed.

At the end of the nearly 14-hour session, presiding judge Esther Chajut, granted a period of 21 days to submit amendments.

Seibert was also present at the session as a spectator. In a video posted on X, he said in Hebrew, ‘I think something important is happening here for Israeli democracy, and we, as friends of Israel, are also looking with a lot of interest towards the Supreme Court, and I wanted to see for myself.’

Seibert has already been criticized by the Israeli side in the past, after he had attended an alternative memorial service of Israeli and Palestinian families as a private citizen.

They commemorated relatives who had been killed, in the conflict between the two sides. Some ultra-right demonstrators then disrupted an event held in front of the ambassador’s residence in Herzliya in June.

Iran confirms prisoner swap with US to take place on Monday

A prisoner exchange between Iran and the US, which has been in the works for months, is to take place later today, following the release of frozen Iranian assets in South Korea, a spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry told journalists on Monday.

Five American citizens are to return to the US, spokesman Nasser Kanaani said. In return, the US will pardon five Iranian nationals who had been convicted or charged there.

It was initially unclear whether the prisoners were already on their way home.

It has been known for several weeks that the US and Iran, were negotiating a prisoner exchange. In August, Iran’s judiciary released several US citizens from detention, and transferred them to house arrest.

In return, Iran had demanded about $6 billion, which was frozen in South Korea because of international sanctions.

The money is to be transferred from South Korea to Qatar.

Somali forces kill 30 al-Shabab militants in central region

The Somali National Army, killed more than 30 al-Shabab fighters on Saturday evening, in operations in central Somalia.

‘The operation resulted in the death of 30 fighters, the destruction of four vehicles, and the seizure of two more vehicles and weapons,’ the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism said in a statement released on Saturday evening in Mogadishu.’We are grateful to the brave citizens who chose to stand against the enemy. We are united in our mission to eradicate al-Shabab,’ it added.

The ministry also confirmed that Mohamed Bashir Muse, a senior al-Shabab leader, was among the 30 fighters killed during the operations.

It said the joint military operations are underway in areas under Mahaday district in Middle Shabelle region targeting senior al-Shabab fighters hiding near river banks.

Residents said the armed forces and the local forces have taken full control of Sargo and Qodqod villages in the region of Mudug.

The move came as the African Union Transition Mission is expected to scale down its troops this month by a further 3,000 personnel, after successfully withdrawing 2,000 troops and handing over six military bases to the Somali side in June.

The withdrawal of 3,000 AU troops in the second phase is expected to be completed by the end of September.

LUTH commemorates World Patient Safety Day, harps on patient safety

The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) on Monday commemorated World Patient Safety Day.

Speaking during the commemoration at Hall 36, LUTH Idi-Araba in Lagos, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo said the day is one of the World Health Organisation (WHO) pivotal global public health initiatives.

Adeyemo said that it was a day set aside to raise awareness abouth the importance of patient safety within clinical and health care environments.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that World Patient Safety Day is celebrated every year on Sept. 17 to spread awareness around the world about patient safety.

The CMD said that this year’s theme: ‘Engaging Patients for Patients Safely’ aims to influence stakeholders including patients, families, policy makers, health care leaders, health workers and patient organisations.

He said they are expected to work collaboratively towards co-designing health care policies and safety interventions that truly reflect the needs and preferences of patients and ultimately enhancing healthcare safety globally.

“Co-designing is a relatively new concept, especially in this part of the world. Co-design is the method of involving users (people) stakeholders (decision makers) and practitioners (front line staff) in the process of design.

“It is important that everyone affected has the opportunity to input into the process, hence the theme for this year.

“Nothing about us without us has been a mantra used by a host of excluded groups over the past 20 years and it has never been more important than in a digital age where poor design can increase health inequalities by further exclusion” he said.

Adeyemo said that when talking about patients safety, patients themselves must be involved, their opinions must count.

The event featured different sessions from experts on “Advancing Patient Safety through Patient Support Groups, Pharmacists as the Gatekeeper of Patient Safety, How patients and Patient Support Groups can Influence Health policy and The Role of Nurses in Promoting Patient Safety”.

The patients also gave virtual testimonies of how they were being cared for in LUTH. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
