Major Boakye-Djan (RTD) dies at age 81-Abrofohene family announces

The Abrofohene family in the Jaman South District of the Bono Region has announced the death of Osahene Major Kojo Boakye-Djan (RTD), who was the official spokesperson of the erstwhile Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC).

Mr. Godfred Boakye-Djan, a nephew of Major Boakye-Djan (RTD) and Press Secretary to the Abrohene Family, told the Ghana News Agency in Tema that he died at age 81 on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at the 37 Military Hospital.

He said until his death, he was the Abusiapayin of the family, adding that the family will announce other details in due time.

He added that all necessary arrangements would be duly communicated to the public after consultations and meetings.

In March 2022, the military cum politician launched his book title, ‘Beyond Fear and Power’, which was authored by Mr. Korletey Jorbua Obuadey and captured his pioneering journey from the village to the city and back.’

Major Boakye-Djan (RTD) worked as a journalist with the Daily Graphic and Ghanaian Times and was also the D Company Commander of the fifth Battalion of Infantry prior to the June 4, 1979, coup d’état in Ghana.

Advocacy groups intensify efforts to action against poverty

The Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP-Ghana), a network of civil society organisations across the world, has held its 2023 National People’s Assembly as part of a consultative process in Accra.

The event, among others, is to address problems encountered at the local levels, help move the Sustainable Development Goas (SDGs) into real life for everyone and to identify marginalised groups in communities, constituencies and at the national levels.

Ghana’s People’s Assembly, as part of the Global Week to Act for SDGs scheduled to take place from September 10 to 25, 2023, mobilised its members from Abibinsroma Foundation and the

Global Neighbourhood Healthcare Development Organisation (GloNeHDO), to discuss the SDGs Mid-Point to demand an end to poverty and hunger.

It brought community leaders fact-to-face with the people to hear and respond to their demands, invite voices that have historically been marginalised in decision-making and public polices and civil society organisations (CSOs)to make demands.

It was on the theme: ‘SDGs Mid-Point and Global Justice’ and attended by stakeholders, CSOs and waste management groups such as the Assorted Waste Alliance and Divine Group International.

Some of the key demands they made were the call to end ‘Poverty and Hunger, Extreme inequalities in the communities and worsened family’s conditions by the COVID pandemic, as well as the future threat of climate change.’

Others were end to ‘High inflation and the effects of wars on communities in the world, Global justice including universal social protection, and Tax and debt justice for developing countries.’

Mr Benjamin Lartey, the Chief Executive Officer of GloNeHDO, who chaired the function in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said the meeting was an avenue for participants to identify problems and concerns.

It was also to enable them to analyse the structural causes, discuss and develop a set of demands and devise steps to address them.

He said Ghana had an obligation under the UN 17 SDGs, which called for action by all countries to develop in a global partnership.

Mr Lartey said the meeting recognised that ending poverty and other deprivations must go with strategies that would improve health and education, reduce inequalities while tackling climate change.

Madam Jane Amerley Oku, the Chief Executive Officer of Janok Foundation, a community-based organisation and a member of CONNIWAS, took participants through the 17 Goals to assist them in their service delivery in the communities.

Mr Hendrick Noble Kinnah, the Assemblyman for Odorna Electoral Area, expressed gratitude to the organisers for bringing the 2023 Ghana’s People’s Assembly to his community.

Ga Central MCE pledges to provide development to residents of Anyaa-Sowutuom

Mr Bashiru Kamara Mohammed, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ga Central has assured traditional authorities of Anyaa-Sowutuom of continuous collaboration for the development of the area.

He said traditional authorities were indispensable in the overall scheme of things as far as achieving development objectives were concerned.

Mr Mohammed gave the assurance when he addressed the Chief and people of Sowutuom during their Annual Homowo Festival and exhibition.

The event was held by Nii Osabu Akwei Tibo I, the Chief of Sowutuom in collaboration with the Ga Central Municipal Assembly and the Greater Accra Regional National Commission on Culture.

Mr Mohammed acknowledged that the wide array of development projects in the community would not have been possible without the intervention and collaboration of the chief of the area, citing the example of government flagship programme Agenda 111.

He commended the chief for being instrumental in the progress of the area while promoting and maintaining peace among the people, stating that such a gesture brings about development.

The MCE called for the upholding of the Ghanaian festivals and cultural heritage, saying; ‘We cannot do away with our cultural traditions because it tightens the bond that exists between us as a society.’

Western Regional team of journalists to be empowered by M-CODe

To guarantee that coverage of open defecation is expanded, the Media Coalition Against Open Defecation (M-CODe) will host a three-day empowerment forum for journalists in the Western Region from Wednesday, September 6, to Friday, September 8.

According to a news release from Mr. Francis Ameyibor, M-CODe National Convenor, the three-day empowerment event is part of the ‘M-CODe 2023 Anti-Open Defecation Nationwide Advocacy efforts supported by World Vision Ghana.

The Regional Coordinating Council, Environmental Health Department, Ghana Education Service, Ghana Health Service, Community Water and Sanitation Agency, Department of Community Development, Department of Gender, and the National Commission for Civic Education are among the organisations that Mr. Ameyibor emphasised as additional stakeholders in addition to the media.

The three-day event would also include participation from other parties, including Regional Environmental Officers, the Environmental Protection Agency, CONIWAS, Kings Hall Media, World Vision, and members of civil society organisations.

Others are Regional Officers from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Ministry of Sanitation, and the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, among others, who work to revive and maintain the activism to alter the rules and build a society free of open defecation.

As part of national efforts to put an end to the practise, M-CODe believed that empowerment through capacity building, connecting key players in the battle against open defecation, and developing a forum to expose communities still engaging in the practice were all important.

He mentioned the public awareness campaign towards the global aim of eliminating open defecation by 2030 and the empowering of media, who serve as important partners to revitalise locally.

M-CODe acknowledges Sustainable Development Goal Six, which calls for a significant increase in toilet use, stating that ‘open defecation is an affront to the dignity, health, and well-being, especially of girls and women’.

The Media Coalition Against Open Defecation reiterated its called on the corporate world to support the national efforts to end open defecation, which also required investment in the construction, maintenance, and use of latrines and other basic services.

Newmont committed to building capacity of local businesses, Manager

The Newmont Ghana Gold Limited has reassured its commitment to enhancing the capacity of local businesses to create employment opportunities in its host communities.

Mr Samuel Osei, Manager of Communications and External Relations, Ahafo South and North Mines, gave the assurance when he was speaking at a media workshop organised by the company at Abesim near Sunyani, saying that objective could be achieved through the implementation of programmes such as the Enhanced Local Procurement Programme (ELPP) and other local content opportunities.

The workshop brought together selected journalists of both the private and state media from the Ahafo and Bono Regions to update them on the company’s Ahafo North Project with focus among others on information regarding the project’s status and stakeholder collaboration.

Mr Osei said the company recognised the importance of supporting local economies and believes that investing in local businesses could contribute to sustainable development and create long-term value for both the company and the communities.

He announced the Ahafo North project was expected to generate approximately 1,800 jobs during the construction phase and 550 direct jobs during its operation, saying Newmont had committed to gradually recruit up to 53 per cent of its workforce from the immediate host communities as part of an employment agreement signed between the company and its host communities.

Journalists urged to engage in regular exercise

President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Chris Isiguzo, has advised members to engage in regular exercises to promote health alertness and fitness among practitioners.

Iziguzo made the call at a Walk for Health” and medical outreach for journalists, facilitated by the NUJ-FCT Council in partnership with Zeberced Group on Thursday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that over 150 members of the NUJ-FCT engaged in the exercise from Berger junction at Utako District through Jabi District, Abuja.

The walk has Isiguzo and the Managing Director of Zeberced Group, Adil Kurt walking for about five kilometers.

Iziguzo described the walk as a ‘wealth package’ as exercises as a natural way to promotes healthy living.

He said that the exercises which aimed to promote healthy living, fitness and mental alertness among journalists would be accompanied by medical checks.

“Medical checks will be carried out on members to expose them to routine health engagements.

“Part of the packages of this engagement is of course the health walk which we had from Berger to the council office,” he said.

Chinese Yuan strengthens to 7. 1788 against dollar

The central parity rate of the Chinese currency renminbi, or the yuan, strengthened 23 pips to 7.1788 against the dollar on Friday, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trade System.

In China’s spot foreign exchange market, the yuan is allowed to rise or fall by two per cent from the central parity rate each trading day.

The central parity rate of the yuan against the dollar is based on a weighted average of prices offered by market makers before the opening of the interbank market each business day.
